Stainless conical - beer stone? discoloration?

I used a little liquid BKF on a paper towel, and it wipes right off. Maybe the BS Remover loosened it up some. Even a wet paper towel looks brown if I rub those spots (bkf is quicker).

Stainless conical - beer stone? discoloration?

I bought a used conical. The insides were a little “dirty”. Looked like a buildup of beer stone I thought. I soaked with PBW and it cleaned up good. At certain angles, I can see kind of a “rainbow” coloration in different areas. Thought it might still be some beer stone remnants or...

    Hops combination question

Making a NEIPA tomorrow. I have Mosaic, El Dorado, Amarillo and Simcoe on hand. I was thinking of Amarillo at 10 mins, or maybe flameout and then whirlpool with Mosaic and El Dorado. Maybe a splash of Amarillo then also? Should I do a small bitter addition at 60 mins with something like...

Water chemistry question - sparge water

Yeah, it's all Gypsum, Calcium Chloride and Epsom salt. The recipe is calling for most of the Calcium Chloride addition in the sparge water. So, maybe just combine the mash and sparge numbers and put it all in the mash?

Water chemistry question - sparge water

Both fantastic suggestions, neither of which I had thought of. Thanks!!

Water chemistry question - sparge water

I've been experimenting with the Brewfather app, and recently had a water test done so I can start to make adjustments there. Brewfather splits the water additions into Mash and Sparge. I have a HERMS system, so my HLT usually has extra water in it to keep the HERMS coil submerged. So, I'm a...

Where to buy tri-clover ball valves

Saw that one. I guess the confusing part is each seller seems to have a bit different specifications for their ball valves. I hadn’t looked at this one close enough. I need to look at my other TC fittings, thought they were 3/4” bore. This might work though, thanks!!! Todd

Where to buy tri-clover ball valves

A couple years back I used brewhardware, but they don't seem to have the selection of ball valves anymore. I'm having a hard time finding "L" 3-way ball valves. Any ideas? Todd

    Plumbing Help

Thanks for the feedback!! I think on the wort side I would need a 3 way both in and out. On the in side I would be able to switch from recirc to whirlpool. On the out side I would switch from herms to BK in for whirlpool. Not sure how I would switch to chiller without disconnecting hoses. Todd

    Cross post - plumbing help

I posted this in Equipment/Sanitation, but thought it might be better suited here - I'm trying to make my brew day a little easier. I have a single tier set up, herms coil in the HLT, and 2 pumps. I use my pumps as "water pump" and a "wort pump". While recirculating after mash in, the water...

    Plumbing Help

I'm trying to make my brew day a little easier. I have a single tier set up, herms coil in the HLT, and 2 pumps. I use my pumps as "water pump" and a "wort pump". While recirculating after mash in, the water pump is just circulating water in the HLT to keep temp consistent. Wort pump is...

    Stout Stainless Counterflow Chiller

Exchillerator has an option for tri-clover fittings, and made in the U.S.. The Stout seems to be larger ID and longer overall. Todd

My beer has a cider taste....

It was a Cream Ale - 2 row, flaked corn and rice. It was in the fermenter (stainless) for 2 weeks, started at 65 degrees and bumped it up to about 68 the last several days. Yeast was US-05.

My beer has a cider taste....

Maybe it's all in my head, but - I'm attempting to get my new system dialed in. First attempt was on a new recipe. Had a couple expected hiccups, and the beer was ok. Hard to say if the recipe just wasn't great, or if it was the process. So, went back to a known recipe, which is a cream...

Paint or powder coat for my new Brew stand?

Powder coat might not work around the burners. I added 2 layers of "heat wrap" and it's helping, but I think it's short term. The place I had it done said they would blast it back to bare and put ceramic on for the difference in cost. But, the difference was fairly significant. I think I...

Methods to mark sight glass Stout Kettle

My Wife has a Silhouette (cuts vinyl basically). "Printed" out gallon numbers with half gallon "-". I put these on the metal part of the sight glass. Looks great. Todd

    BG14 - Orange flame

So, I finally got around to troubleshooting more. Took the burner apart, and all is good there. I removed the shutter completely and put some tape on the openings around the orifice. With approximately the same opening as the shutter wide open, weak very orange flames. Moving the tape so...

    BG14 - Orange flame

It is the burner furthest away. Would orange indicate not enough oxygen though, or too much fuel? Or just improper mixture? It's maybe 3' of total length further. Todd

    BG14 - Orange flame

I've only used the stand once and it's been like this from the get go. I was hoping it was due to the pot being too close to the flame. But, it's the same issue with no pot. Maybe I'll take the shutter off and see what happens. I could make the shutter openings larger. There doesn't seem to...

    BG14 - Orange flame

My stand has 2 bg14 burners few by VR8200 valves. One burner works great. The other burner I can't get rid of the orange flame. I've checked all the normal stuff and it's fine. I replaced the orifices on both with proper ones from Williams. Orange is not enough oxygen, so should have...
