Cheapest hop blocker/ mesh strainer ever?

Thought the same thing. It does indeed strain the hops from your wort... It does indeed clog crazy fast with any serious amount of hops. I would only use it again if I had 2 oz or less I think. Was a PITA so I'm looking for a better solution that's not crazy $$$

Moved to new house. Beer doesnt taste as good.

Using RO or distilled may help, but to really answer your question about what's changed, get the water for your next brew from your old neighbor or someone that you're positive has the same source as your old place. Doesn't necessarily fix your problem but pretty easily confirms or denies the...

    Tri-clamps vs Camlocks

I have only used tri-clamp on some industrial scientific equipment, and they seem more unwieldy. I have cam locks on my eBrewery setup which I'm very happy with, and they can be operated one handed both attaching and detaching. The tri-clamps can be a little easier to clean I think, but most of...

    Natural Spring Water

You're boiling it to brew, what's the worst that could happen? I'm a trial and error kind of guy. The scientific way is certainly send it out and brew to style with whatever the result is. I don't see anything wrong with just trying a batch and seeing if it turns out. Maybe even just a gallon...

I'll be brewing an apple ale and my first pilsner, then to my cousin's wedding.

    Hop Bines Dying Off

I would still look at your drainage in the soil, regardless of in or out of a pot. What kind of soil conditions do you have in the immediate area and close by? After rain does the area stay soggy or drain quickly? Maybe not an issue since I think yellow is usually a better indication of over...

    Hop Bines Dying Off

I would look first at your soil moisture and then fertilization. If they're first year from a healthy rhizome I don't see that as the same a transplant shock. Hops love water, but you don't want the soil soggy or you can promote mold growth. Personally I water mine twice a day even from the time...

Sanitizing bottles with distilled white vinegar...

I've never actually sanitized bottles, just made sure they were clean and free of any residue. I never let them sit either, they get hot water rinsed right after pouring my brew. I only put them in the dishwasher on high heat pots and pans (my dishwasher doesn't have a sanitize setting) and I've...

Mash overnight or Mash out for boil next morning?

It's possible of course, but the boil should take care of that as you mention, and I wouldn't think just overnight would give the bacteria enough time to create off flavors, though I'm no biologist. Maybe not only clean, but sanitize the BK in this situation just to be extra cautious. And keep...

Mash overnight or Mash out for boil next morning?

I'm guessing your question is which is best practice for this situation? I would think staying up for the extra two or so hours would be worth it to finish the brew, better to put off cleaning and have to scrub a little harder than sacrifice beer quality. If you have to chose between a super...

Can too vigorous a boil oxidize the wort?

Good point with the driving out oxygen during the boil, I just wonder if the constant aeration negates that fact. What is the difference with HSA in homebrew vs commercial? (I do swirl and have a venturi for aerating while transferring to fermenter.)

Can too vigorous a boil oxidize the wort?

Sounds like a pretty simple question but I haven't found quite the right thread to deal with all my concerns. I am considering this from several different angles. 1. A strong rolling boil is needed for good hop isomerization and to achieve good hot break. 2. A VERY vigorous boil can cause...

Getting ready for my first full boil.

I assume you're doing extract kits and steeping a small portion of specialty grains. That said, follow all the other instructions the same. If you end up with too much water in the brew kettle you will have to boil longer to reach the desired OG and that will affect your hop addition times. If...

Burning down the house (or keeping the kettle from the counter)

Adding a flex hose from after the gas valve to the stove should give you all the distance you need to raise it up as much as you need. If it were me I'd make the landlord do it anyway just because it's a hazard for any large pot, but may not mention the brewing. To comment on the burner...

    Urgent advice needed

The fresher the yeast the better, with liquid especially. You may have just lucked out with your purchase and gotten something brand new.

QUICK - Wort always turns out too dark.

Extracts just tend to end up darker, don't worry about it much. I always thought the same thing but didn't read about this fact until after I had switched to all grain and realized it for myself.

Looking for instructions/help for a electric herms build. Please help!

I have a google doc up with some sourcing info here https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B0pnODGktozrU0JwMS1xS1dEbWM/edit?usp=sharing I spent about $1000 all said and done but I needed all the fittings, hoses, pumps and such to get into all grain. I was only using one kettle extract setup before...

    Hops in Barrels

I think the barrels will be fine for your first year or 2, but your trellis sounds pretty sketchy. By the end of the growing season even first year hops can have significant heft. My first year plants grew up and over my 12 foot 4x4 structure, (probably 16' in all) before I cut the ends off so...
