    Ten Years In

It all started with a homebrew kit on Christmas 2011. I believe my wife kind of regrets that gift. ;) Yesterday brewed Batch 185, so decided to look at a few statistics: First batch was a Truebrew extract 'Mocktoberfest'. Moved on to real lagers later that year and have done a total of 10...

    Disaster finally happened....

After 8 years of brewing, it finally happened. I tripped and spilled 7 gallons of sweet wort. Fortunately it was preboil, so there was no scalding. But I think I tweaked a muscle..... And I'm sure glad there was no one around with a video camera.

    AHA 'Mead Day'

Wondering if anyone is going to make anything for the AHA's 'Mead day'? Just saw it today. Think I'll take their suggested recipe, cut it back to a 1gallon batch, and make a bochet.

    Can't help bragging

Scored 2 qts. of Appleblossum honey from a side-of-the-road vendor yesterday. She said their hives are in an apple orchard. Each qt. weighed 2lb 11oz. and cost $12, so <$4.50 per pound. Since I usually do 1 gallon batches, each qt. should do 1 batch. May have to go get some more and go hog wild!

American Advent Beer Calendar- What would YOU put in it?

Hey folks, Finished up a gift from my wife- a German Beer Advent Calendar 2018. See thread www.homebrewtalk.com/forum/threads/beer-advent-calendar-2018.659173/ Made me wonder if someone were to do this with NorthAmerican craft beers, what 24 beers would you include? Hard for me to name names...

    Beer Advent calendar 2018

I hesitated to start this post because it seems kind of narcissistic. But I received one of those COSTCO German Beer Advent calendars. So, unless youse folks tell me you're bored, my plan is to post a pic of each beer during the Advent season.

    NEIPA and LODO

Here's a question for discussion: It's apparent that oxidation is a particularly bad problem for NEIPAs. If you keg, then you can take precautions to limit O2 exposure. But what about us bottlers? My thought is taken from a common practice among wine producers: They (we) use Camden every time we...

    What happened to sponsor giveaways?

Don't want to sound greedy, but how come there haven't been any giveaways since October 2017?

    O2 absorbing threads

Q- What is the general consensus among the scientific bent? Do the O2 absorbing caps work? And what if you soak them in starsan prior to capping- does that deactivate them? Here's my story- I found 2 bottles of a dopplebock that I bottled 4 years ago and stored in a stryofoam insulated box. One...

    100th Batch

Hey folks. I posted my 50th batch back in December 2014. Today I did batch #100. A partigyle: Batch 100a= Barleywine/Braggot Batch 100b= 'The Tsar's Kvass' from AHA Jan. 2017. Then moved right onto Batch #101- Loghouse Honey Porter.

    NHC question

Hey folks, I've printed out the NHC handbook, and looked pretty extensively at the 2015 BJCP style guide. I'm not sure I'll enter or be chosen, but my Q concerns a 7.9% StickeAltbier that is just coming ready and so far seems like it's good enough. But the category 7B Altbier specifically says...

Cold crash and gelatin for wine?

74 batches of beer, but my 1st batch of wine, so I have a newbie question that I'm sure will be answered with one word- Patience. But here goes anyways: 1G batch of Dandelion wine which I racked for the 1st time over the weekend, 10 days after starting it. I followed Yooper's recipe. Now, if...

    'Clarence' Stout

Anyone remember 'Clarence the Cross-eyed Lion' from the TV show 'Daktari'? I've been working on trying to replicate 'Lion Stout', a wonderful tropical stout from Sri Lanka for the past 4 years. Mostly to piss-poor results, including 1 total dumper and another that I should have dumped but am...

    Long Trail Standout

Just tried one. Very, very nice. Going to have to get me some Equinox hops for my next PA.

    90% mash efficiency

I think I know the answer, but I'm going to post this Q anyways. I've been mashing with the same setup for 3.5 years, have done the same recipe(RyeCentennial Pale ale) at least 4 times over that period, and keep extensive notes about my brewing process. Got the grain bill (crushed) from the...

    Snow Day !!

So, we're having a pretty big storm today in Downeast Maine. Big enough to shut down my office. But I'm the boss, and am just sitting around surfing the net, listening to some twirtly little flute something on NPR. BUT WAIT- I have a beer all ready to brew at home that I was planning on getting...

    My Apologies to all BIABers

Hey folks, Background- I have been brewing now for 4 years, the last 2.5 AG using a 5G Dennystyle round cooler mashtun with a braid. Very happy with it and usually get mash efficiencies between 75-80%. However, with grain bills above 12 lbs, I run into volume issues. So last year I decided to...

    50th Batch

Hey Folks! I know there are many brewers on this forum that count into multiple hundreds of batches. And believe me when I say I appreciate their pioneering work and willingness to share their wisdom. But, permit me to brag just a little. 3 years plus 1 day after starting this hobby/obsession...

    sorbate laced cider

I missed the boat this year. When fresh, non-treated cider was available back in the beginning of September, I wasn't ready to do my usual batch of cider/graf. Now that I'm ready, the only cider I can find has been treated with sorbate. I can get pasteurized, no sorbate apple juice though. So...

    Pizza & Beer

OK, after putting aside my Belgian Triple to finish later because the sausage and mushroom pizza was overwhelming the flavor, I started wondering: "What is your favorite pizza/beer style combo?"
