So tonite I racked my Sam Adams clone...

and afterwards, when I was cleaning up, I noticed some black mold-type something growing my racking hose.. I'm normally pretty thorough in cleaning/inpecting everything beforehand, but in a haste to get everythign done tonite before I leave for T-day, I guess I missed it. I hope the...

    Cubicle fun

We've had a long-standing tradition at my office to 'decorate' an employee's cubicle while they're on vacation. This is what I returned to after my trip to Germany this summer: So time for a little revenge... We built a mult-level platform of cups flled partially with water (and other...

    Like hops?

I experimented a little bit with an american pale ale recipe my LHBS offers and I must say, I'm pleased with the results. I just cracked the first one after 5 days in the bottle, and it is by far the best I've brewed, in my short experience. I hope I can let these age a bit before I drink them...

Beer's hops seen to inhibit tumor growth CORVALLIS, Ore., Nov. 7 (UPI) -- Research at Oregon State University shows that beer contains a micronutrient that inhibits cancer-causing enzymes. The compound, xanthohumol, was first isolated by Oregon State 10 years ago and an increasing number...

    Is this much sediment normal?

It's only been about 2 hrs since I got the wort into the carboy and there seems to be a LOT of sediment already. Superhuge version I'm waiting for fermenation to start before I move to my lagering fridge, but I don't think I've seen this much sediment after such a short time. Have I just...

    Lagering question...

I've had a Pils in the secondary @ 38F for about 2 weeks now, and I was thinking about brewing a Sam Adams clone. Would I be able to raise the temp of my fridge to ferment the new batch w/o affecting the Pils in some way, or should I just brew an ale for the time being?

    nocarbonationfest

I cracked one of my Oktoberfests... it's flat. :( The lids seem to seal ok, and I added the same amount of corn sugar as I normally do, but yet they're flat. They've been in the bottle since 9/22, so they should have some carbonation by now. Tipping the bottle, down then up, it...

    Dirty Jobs on Discovery

I missed the beginning of the show, but they have him in a brewery right now, cleaning. Hopefully, they'll replay it later so I can catch the entire thing. Edit: Looks like this was shot at The Long Trail Brewing Company in Vermont.

    Black yeast/sediment in bottle?

I just cracked one of the Hefe Weizens I brewed 1.5 months ago (my first batch). They've been in the bottle since 8-23. I only have about 6 of them left, but I noticed that in almost all of them, the yeast/sediment at the bottom of the bottles has turned mostly black. They taste great though...

    Hops tea

I just got a lb of Cascade hops delivered to me from hopsdirect. Since I'm sitting here at work smelling these lovely hops, and can't have a beer, I decided to steep some hops and make tea. It's quite bitter, but sugar fixes that right up. I like it. People at work here think I'm crazy.. lol

    Keeping unfermented wort

How long will it keep? I haven't brewed the batch yet (pilsner), but I think I got a dead batch of yeast.. 1.5 days, and the smack pack never expanded, so I made a starter with it last nite, but no activity there either. I'm going to be short on time for the next two weekends, so is it ok to...

A German brewery will give away 10,000 litres of beer

A German brewery will give away 10,000 litres of beer to fans of the first team to beat Bayern Munich. I wonder if I become a bandwagon fan of whoever beats them, I'll get some free beer?

Just picked up a free deep-freezer - is it big enough?

As the title says, a friend just gave me an old deep freezer. I plan on picking up an external temp controller next week. The internal dimensions are ~28Hx38Wx24D, with a 12x10 portion on the right hand side taken up by the compressor, etc. It seems like it will be deep enough for carboys...

Interesting. So are they just bottling the beer prematurely? TOKYO (AFP) - Japan's top brewer Asahi Breweries said it had developed a beer that changes taste over time as the fermentation process continues after it is bottled. The Asahi Super Yeast Draft changes its aroma and flavor...
