I've done a little searching but haven't found too much information.

Are the German/Weyermann Cara-malts, eg. CaraMunich, CaraAmber, CaraHell etc malts any different to normal Crystal/Caramel malts? Can I substitute without too much taste difference?

My LHBS only carries, Light Cara (15L), Crystal (75L), and Dk Crystal (120L) but has recently got a bunch of the above Weyermann malts in.

If a recipe calls for Crystal 40L could I substitute CaraAmber (36L)?

Or if it calls for Crystal 60L could I sub Caramunich II (63L) or would I better off sub'ing the LHBS Crystal 75L?

Cheers and beers,

Glenim.

Yes they are often named just for commercial reasons. For example, Carahell is a malt often used in Helles style beers whereas Carapils is used in Pilsners, etc..
