I dont know about using the joint compound buckets for brewing, should probably be food grade buckets, just a thought....you could try a local bakery for the bucket, maybe for free then go to the LHBS for a pre-drilled, lid with gromet. +1 on the turkey fryer, it will be a big help for the boil...

first PM, just had to tell somebody

That's good to know, i had always heard not to use aluminum for the boil, something about leaching nasties, so i didnt delve into it any further. With this new information, i now have 2 5 gallon brew kettles....hmmmm.....also have 2 primaries....looks like next time will be a 2 batch brew day...

Yep. Sometimes makes you wonder when things go really smooth. It didnt go this smoothly on my last extract batch. I guess all the reading and studying paid off.

first PM, just had to tell somebody

Thanks my fellow brewers. I have a turkery fryer burner (and pot, but its alum, kinda scared to use it) and a 5 gal SS pot, i did my mash on the stove in my kettle then moved outside to do the boil. Im in NC so it isnt too cold outside here and i tried the stovetop method one time, just took...

    ferm temp too high?

Thanks for all the replies and the great info. It is as i suspected. I have already started my hunt for a fridge for fermenting and clearing out a corner of my woodshop to build myself a brew room. I and (and my friends) like my beer and i'm needing to get a pipeline going if i am going to keep...

    ferm temp too high?

Yep, the fermentation activity was crazy, didn't have to put on a blowoff tube but it was an almost constant stream of bubbles in the airlock for nearly 3 days. I guess it wouldn't hurt to try to cool it off a bit somehow till i get a chance to bottle.

    ferm temp too high?

I had thought about that and read where others had suggested that, but right now i am having to keep my primary in the house, i dont have a garage, i do have an out building, which is my wood shop, but it is warmer. SWMBO kinda frowns when i move the primary to a more ideal location. I am...

    ferm temp too high?

I brewed an Irish Draught extract about 2 1/2 weeks ago, used Danstar Windsor Ale yeast, pitched at about 74 deg. I don't have a good way (yet) to control my fermenting temperature and the temp has stayed around 80 deg the entire time. I hit my 045 OG then promptly dropped my hydrometer and...

    water question

I am about 99% sure I only used 2 gallons, I use a 1qt pyrex cup to do my measuring and as I was counting the top off, i could see that I originally put in 8 instead of 10. here are my hop additions and times -- 0.25 oz Columbus (60 min) -- 0.5 oz Columbus (20 min) -- 1 oz Cascade (10 min) --...

    water question

I put in a batch of Jami'ls Evil Twin yesterday and as I was topping the fermentor up to the 5 gal mark it dawned on me that I only boiled 2 gal of water in the boil instead of 2 1/2. It's too late to do anything about it but I was just wondering what effect that is going to have on the final...
