    Water Chemistry on the fly

Hi there, so I have brewed a couple of porters that have been duds. I found online that water chemistry might be the cause of this because the roasted grains have such acidity. The site recommended 1gram of baking soda per gallon of brewing water in a porter. I don't have access to my water...

    Long Trail Yeast

Well, I was thinking of trying a clone to the Stand Out American Pale Ale. It's their new spring seasonal. Any ideas?

    Amarillo Amber Ale

I am using Briess Sparkling Amber. http://www.brewingwithbriess.com/Assets/PDFs/Briess_PISB_CBWSparklingAmberDME.pdf Looking at this sheet, it doesn't say whether they using caramel malts in making the DME. Is there someplace else I should look?

    Amarillo Amber Ale

Hi there! It's been a while since I've posted, but I really want get some feedback on this recipe before I brew this weekend. I've been brewing for just about a year, and I've been playing around with making my own one gallon extract recipes lately (some simple porters and a pumpkin ale). I...

    Yeast arrived warm

Its not on a stir plate. I tasted a little and it has sweet wort taste, with hints of yeast. I am hopeful and think I'll wait another day or so before I decide to dump it.

    Yeast arrived warm

I'm not sure how the yeast could be growing without signs of fermentation. There really isn't much foam when I swirl it and what foam there is dies down quick. No bright yeast cake either, but there is a dark ring at the bottom. How long does your typical starter take? Should I try decanting...

    Yeast arrived warm

Ordered Wyeast 1187 from a mail order and it took longer than expected to get here. Quite frankly, it was a bit warm when I opened the package even though there had been an ice pack in there. I made a starter for it to see if I might get some growth out of one or two thousand stragglers which I...

    Pumpkin beer and steeping grains

I'm going to be making my first pumpkin beer tomorrow and I just had a quick question about steeping grains. The one gallon recipe I have made includes 1.25lbs of dried malt extract, and I was going to steep 5oz of Carmel 40L. Is this too much? I know a pound of steeping grain is typical for a 5...

    Adding yeast when bottling lager

I'm planning on bottling my first lager in just a couple of days and I was wondering if I need to add yeast. Brew day was a little over 8 weeks ago. I've heard that adding some yeast of the same strain won't do any harm, but I am curious, what harm could I do if I don't add any yeast?

    Stuck fermentation... I think.

Just smelled around the lid. Hmm... there is a sweet smelling spot. Pulled up the lid on that side to reset the seal. I'll keep you updated. Thanks!

    Stuck fermentation... I think.

Hello all! This is my first post as I am new to the forum (well I have been reading a lot) and I am new to homebrewing. Just finished brewing our fourth batch of beer on Saturday (6/27/15) using Northern Brewer’s Sierra Madre Pale Ale kit. We opted for the liquid yeast (Wyeast 1056) and did...
