So I have spent quite a bit of time on this site since i joined and i noticed that unlike the other two forums that i visit regularly (all jeep related) there wasn't really any on going photo contests. [correct me if I'm wrong]

One of the ones I personally enjoy most is a weekly contest. No prizes just a fun way to share photos. every week is a different catagory chosen by the winner of the previous week.

Would anyone be interesting in something like that?

I think that's an awesome idea. Side Note: I LOVE, Laramie.. If I could choose to live anywhere it would be Wyoming.

I'll try to make a thread here in the next week or so. It would be sooner but I have limited access to internet out in the field for work.

Second the motion, if you need a hand... shoot me a PM. This sounds like a lot of fun.

Sorry guys. Unfortunately I'm a college student and my final senior design project has been consuming every ounce of free time I've had. If anyone would like to get this started feel free. Unfortunately for the foreseeable future I'm booked up full.

No worries. I can help get this kicked off.

We need a theme. (Home brewing obviously. Kettle metal. Grist closeups. Fermentors)

We need a time frame for entries. (Monthly)

We need a way to judge. (polls?)

Rules? (Size of 1024px max width or height, must be a photo taken for the contest, open to HBT members with at least 10 posts.)

Prizes will simply be bragging rights at this point. Maybe we can get TxBrew to post the winner on the home page like the articles?

Let me know what you guys think. :D

Sounds great man.

Polling is how I've seen it done. It allows anonymity and the other forums usually ask that you not vote for your own.

One entry per person, per month.

Each entry needs a few sentences describing it etc..?

In forums past, we posted the pictures in a new topic (ie - March '14 Photo Contest) on the 1st of each month. People have 10 days to submit photos. Judging starts on the 15th. If people want to see the pictures they simply scroll through the thread.

Also, no repeat photos. If you don't win with photo X in March, you can't submit photo X in April.

End of the year all winning photos from the months are compiled for photo of the year?

Sounds like a good excuse to get me to pull out my camera again! And get some constructive feedback on my photography skillz (or lack thereof).

Maybe we should post up a 3 day poll with subject ideas and get this started next week?

Hey Homercidal - Glad to see a mod onboard! Dust that camera off. :D

I threw out a few suggestions for subjects: Kettle metal. Grist closeups. Fermentors.

Let's hear some other suggestions for subjects and then do the poll to decide. :tank:

I like the poll idea. I personally like the DIY side of HB'ing.... not sure how we could incorporate that, but that would be awesome.

Action shots?

I might be interested: it would have to be organized by category home brew photo contest/
grain mill, fermentation chamber, bottling station etc...

voting to begin on a set day and end on a set day, sounds like something for homebrewtalk moderator to come up with.

If they arent interested, ill see If I can create a simple site for this. I don't code, but I know enough that I can edit existing code etc...

keep me posted

Rules so far: (Thank you SilverXZennon for the suggestions!)

  • Size of 1024px max width or height.
  • Must be a photo taken for the contest.

  • No repeat or reusing photos of previous entries.
  • One entry per person, per month.
  • Each entry needs a few sentences describing it.
  • Pictures will be posted in a new topic (ie - March '14 Photo Contest) on the 1st of each month.
  • People have 10 days to submit photos.
  • Judging starts on the 15th.
  • Voting will be through Polls.
  • End of the year all winning photos from the months are compiled for photo of the year.

Please review these and feel free to add/edit any rules suggestions. This looks like it will be fun!

Is judging a poll to the public forum? Can we make a requirement in order to vote?

I would like to suggest that the voting be hidden so that the results so far don't affect the people who are coming in later to vote. Not sure how that would work in this system, but i will look into it.

I think it would be wise to end the voting and pick a winner a couple of days before the start of the next month's contest. This will give the winner time to log in and see that they have won and pick a new subject for the next month. Not everyone logs in every day. Not even me. (sorry, bitches, I have a real life too! ;) )

I will check the poll options and soon start a first topic poll to kick this off. Or someone can just go ahead and pick a topic TOMORROW since it's the first day of the month already.

I tested the poll options and there is no option to hide results once you've voted, so nothing to be done there. It will not show who's voted for what until the person votes, then the results will be shown.

Ok, I'm busting out my DSLR and some lighting equipment and I'm ready! (Just kidding, I don't have lighting equipment or even know how to use it if I had it...) :)

Looks like we have the basics down. Now for a theme.

What if we did a somewhat open theme like brewing ingredients?
Grain
Extract
Hops
Yeast

Sure

Keeping it broad is good so that folks who do all grain / extract will have opportunity to take part ;)

My apologies for not following up with this. I have been distracted by bottling my last batch and a new induction brewing system I am building.

I have one reply so far on the idea of brewing ingredients for our first topic. Anyone else oppose or can we go for it?

I think "brewing ingredients" is a great place to start - The essentials! Later could come SS and automated brewstand beauties. I imagine most of us initially started homebrewing with just the basics and grew from there. This could almost be a tutorial and growing knowledge thread with pictures.

Just my two pennies. :mug:
