Hey everyone,

Planning on brewing a tripel tomorrow. I did a 1L yeast starter today. 3/4cup DME with one vial of WLP500. Used a 1L bottle and covered it with foil. A few hours later...still no action. Will I notice anything or not??

Also, will this be enough of a starter for my Tripel??

Thx!

You'll probably not notice any activity for a few more hours in your starter.

In order to tell if you made an adequate starter, we'd have to know the manufacture date of your yeast, your amount of wort in the fermenter, and your OG. My guess is that it's still going to come out fine! The manufacturers suggest pitching on the low side for Belgian ales. The idea is that under-pitching aids in ester production.

ALSO:

A secondary absolutely necessary for a Tripel? How about 3 weeks in Primary and then into bottles? I don't have a secondary and I've heard pretty fair arguments both ways.

And ALSO:

Is aging REQUIRED for a Tripel or can I bottle it 3 weeks after primary and drink after carbed? I know it'll have some positive gains for the aging but will it still taste good fresh from conditioning??

In my view you're brewing a Tripel and it can be so much more than just drinkable for you.

but if you're in a hurry

Just use a two liter starter, ramp the primary to 76F over 4 days.
It'll likely be within 1 point of FG on day 5, if it is then bottle, carb then drink away. If it tastes ok to you then keep quaffing, otherwise age them in the bottles.
