if i want to make a yeast starter is it a must to use a stir plate or can i just shake or swirl it a few times a day

You will get more yeast growth if you use a stir plate, but swirling it will still grow plenty of yeast cells. Check mrmalty.com's yeast calc to make sure you are pitching an appropriate cell count; you may have to make a larger starter to account for your lack of a stir plate.

I don't use a stir plate, just make a point to swirl the jug every time I walk past. So far it's worked well for me.

Just like almost everything else on these threads, there are many ways to skin a cat. Which way is best for you is for you to decide.
