My husband ordered a kit with Wyeast liquid activator but forgot to order an ice pack with it. When it was delivered I put it in the fridge right away. Will it be OK? If it expands when I smack it does that mean its going to be alright? We plan on brewing Friday night.

It'll probably be ok, but the only way to know for sure, and to maximize both viability and vitality of the yeast, is to make a starter.

Well, if it expands that's the proof that it is ok. Hopefully it didn't get too hot sitting in the back of the UPS truck or whatever it came in.

I would wager you'll have no issues. Next time, order a few packs of dry yeast - Nottingham or Safale-05 just to keep around in case of emergency.

Ordered a kit last week. The yeast (whitelabs vile) was in the box and not on ice. Luckily they sent a packet of dry yeast. I used the vile and stared at the fermented for two days. Nothing! Last night added the packet an aerated and this morning woke to the sounds of bubbles (I keep the fermented in my room so the kids don't mess with it). My theory (although a green theory) is the yeast was no good or not in good shape when I pitched it. I will not buy my yeast on line anymore.
