I bottled my American ale last night and will be doing my next batch after Christmas. My question is I have a vile of white labs session yeast for a Bells Oberon type of beer that I am going to do and it has been in the fridge for about 3 weeks. How long is the yeast good for? Will it be ok or should I get a new one?

Thanks, Nick

If it has been refridgerated the whole time it should be fine. Actually I think you would be fine even if it hasn't be kept cold the whole time. Just follow the directions like you typically do. If you were to do yeast washing you would typically be fine for up to a year. I do not see why this would be any different.

The yeast should have an expiration date on it. If that date is still long into the future, you should be fine. If you are worried, you could always make a starter first, then you'd know for sure before you brewed up the whole batch.

Ok thanks I think I might try to do a starter. I would like to learn how to do one anyway to this would be a great time.

Thanks again, Nick

White Labs has an experation date on it Wyeast has a produced date on theirs. I have used white labs after the experation date with no issue but I agree a starter is wise. I have vial in the fridge from the summer and it just expired so I wouldn't worry to much.

Ok I have done the yeast starter and I think it is working. I did the starter on friday at about 2pm so my next questions are when do I need to use it and do I pour the whole thing in or do I need to put it in the fridge and let the yeast settle and pour off the top of it?

Thanks

ok I am going to brew it sunday morning and I will dump the whole thing in. It is still bubbling good right now. Thanks for all the help.
