I am about to make a starter and i never really paided any mind to the growth model on calculators i always just picked the first one i saw but according to the calculator i get 2 different growth rates between using C.white(stirplate) and braukaiser(stir plate)..Which one should you use? with the C.white one i need to make a 2 step 2 liter starter which gives me more cells then i need and with the braukaiser it calls for a 1 step 2 liter starter...im confused

if anyone can explains the difference i would really appreciate it

The models are based upon two separate sets of data collected by each party. Having done cell counts on my starters the last few months, I am more inclined to lean towards the models based upon Kai Troister's data. YMMV.

Its really, really great to have these calculators around, and they are based on models generated by smart and respectable brewers/scientists/people, but they are only models generated based on a comparatively small data sets generated under reasonably specific conditions (yeast strain, flask shape/volume vs culture volume, stir bar speed, temp, etc, etc). All of them will only get us in the ballpark, but that generally seems to be good enough as beer appears to be quite forgiving of minor under- or over-pitches. I happen to use the BrewUnited calculator and have found it also to work well, but I would wager i would have had a similar outcome in the beer had I used any of the other mentioned calculators, or MrMalty for that matter.

Cheers
