Admittedly this is only my 2nd batch, but I noticed that my Winter Porter has a compacted yeast cake on the bottom of the first bottle I tried.

It's only 2 weeks in, but I wanted to test one out, and I noticed this. The Irish Red I did in the Spring had "loose" yeast, but nothing like the porter. Is this just a result of different yeast strains?

BTW the Porter tasted really good, and already had a good amount of carbonation to it. I did get a slight astringency from letting my grains steep a little to hot, but it's not very strong. The bulk of the batch is set to sit in the bottles for another 2-3 weeks, so it should be excellent by then.

I wouldn't worry about it. Granted I'm not an expert brewer by any means, but if it tastes good I wouldn't be too concerned. Drink it up!

yeasties add flavor.

No, only some yeast add flavor...if you are using nottingham or Us-05, you are using a yeast that adds no flavor, just a very clean profile to let the grainbill shine through. That is why they are called neutal ale yeast.

And whether or not there is a "yeastcake" at the bottom of a bottle has very little bearing on flavor profile of yeast.
