How critical is it to sanitize a smack pack? After about 4 hours of doing my first all grain brew I had the wort down to pitching temp and asked my dad to hand me the pack to sanitize...... He took it upon himself to cut it open. Ahhhhhhh!!!! What can I say? How much trouble will this give me?
Thanks,
Jimi

While it never hurts to sanitize the package (and scissors), chances are that it isn't necessary. Precautions like this are only meant to minimize risk of infection -- it doesn't really mean you are asking for trouble because you skipped this step.

I just float the yeast pack in the 1/2 gallon of iodine water that I keep back after emptying my primary, so I have a place to stick the airlock and maybe re-sanitize a spoon or something.
