Years ago, after I whined to my son (who than worked for Microsoft) about unsolicited automatic updates, he responded that it was akin to a public health situation. (This was also pre-COVID. Of course, mandatory vaccines had long been a thing.)

Now, it seems that (security and other) updates to Windows Home (and other editions, when not managed by group policy) will be totally unavoidable. Maybe this is a good thing...?

I got this email. It made me wonder a couple of things. #1: Does anyone actually bother to read these terms in their totality? Ever? Perhaps some people here actually do, well done you. #2: I really miss when you'd buy software, and install it, and use it, the end.

Sigh.

[Edit: oh yeah, the email, sorry.

So you missed the part about first-born child, now updated to include all genders? Oh well, courts have rules that these ever-changing, inscrutable shrink-wrap agreements are enforceable. No shrink-wrap any more. No media. No perpetual licenses in many cases.

But pretty darn excellent open source software is often available for free. Computer users of the world, unite! You have nothing to lose but your Orifice 365 subscriptions.

Speaking of which I've been flying solo without Office since my graduation a few months ago and Libre Office is pissing me off. They removed the ability to switch the theme from light to dark and vice versa- it just relies on the OS settings. So I either get to see the icons in proper contrast or use my preferred Windows color scheme. Time to switch to WordStar!

Congrats on graduating!

Are you sure the theme setting is not hiding somewhere? They (and others) rearrange stuff just to keep us guessing. 🙄 (I'm away from home so can't explore this; and besides, it might be different on Linux).

Thanks! Took about 25 years but who is counting?

I did find it but the change didn't do anything and a few minutes of searching found that the was a vain change a while ago that disabled those changes. Apparently I can go in and force it in some XML file somewhere which I'll probably do, I just wanted to complain.

I don't know how closely the *nix version tracks the Windows version but I'm running LibreOffice version 25.2.4.3 under Windows and under Tools - Options - Appearance one can install themes from libreoffice.org - and they actually do change the appearance :)

Cheers!

Darnit, I was messing with Themes in View, not Appearance. Thanks!

Reading comprehension for the win

Brings back *VIVID* memories of having to tell, then show, then step by step printout with screenshots.

Again.

And again.

"I don't care why it happens, just fix it"

"Don't show me how to do it, just fix it"

"Can you just fix it for now"

"Why doesn't it just work the way I think it should"

<curls up into fetal position, sucking on thumb bourbon bottle>

That's not a Microsoft release, it's a fanboi hack...

Meanwhile, folks running W11 might want to put a hold on updates for awhile, as the KB5063878 security update and the KB5062660 preview update carry a payload that might turn an SSD (and apparently, HDDs as well) into smoking holes wrt data (as in: "It's dead, Jim")...

Care to elaborate?
I'm usually a "whatever" kinda guy wrt Win updates but I don't need dead SSDs.

That's a negative, ghost rider. I have a company property agreement I have people sign when I deploy laptops, phones, and such. It has a couple paragraphs of 'you break/lose it, you buy it' blah, blah, blah. For my own personal giggles, I added two lines that say something like 'you agree to wash my truck on Thursdays and buy me tacos on Tuesdays. Not one person has caught it.

Zorin OS... if you buy the paid version you can get a windows template
New to me. So it's free, but for $48 they'll include "templates" (themes?) that make the desktop look and act like your choice of Windows version (11 or "classic"), Linux variety, or macOS. Plus some other goodies.

They say it's built on Ubuntu. (I find that Kubuntu's KDE Plasma desktop is quite friendly to Windows users.) What advantages are you finding over various other Ubuntu flavors?

it acts more like windows more than previous linux distros I've tested, you can turn off or on the zoom effect easy, I guess it mostly a better built theme, the free version is just fine, the paid is just better themes and some free apps
