Hi, I've been lurking for a while now trying to absorb as much information as possible before I attempt my first brew. I got this kit which requires me to ferment at a stable, lower temp than I can provide in my house or garage, so I was wanting to build a small fermenting chamber with a spare minifridge I have.

I ordered a basic Willhi WH7016c 110v temp controller from a reputable seller on Ebay. I've hooked it up per the diagram provided not only with the unit but also on the various threads about this controller on this forum, and have not been able to get any sort of reading on the screen. There does not seem to be any power going through the unit at all.

I'm assuming it's not functional and I should probably go ahead and return it, but I was wondering if anyone else has any suggestions before I do that..

thanks for understanding and my apologies if this is a stupid question/thread for this forum.

Is that the same as the STC-1000 that so many of us use or something different?

Do you have a diagram or a picture of your wiring?

I used the one provided in the box with the controller (http://www.al-electronic.com/image/PDF/willhi wh7016c 12vdc user manual.pdf) after double-checking a few diagrams posted around the forum. The diagram in that link shows 12v power but the instructions also say that it works for 110v if that's what model you're using, which is the case for me. It seems to be a basic relay which should work with power applied to it, which is why I'm suspicious of a bad unit since I can't get any sort of reading at all.

crider: I would love to get a Johnson controller, and I've looked at several, but I was honestly trying to save every dollar I could since I was laid off last month.

Should have gotten one of these. No need to wire anything. Just plug in in the wall and the fridge into it. Place probe in the fridge and go from there.

Yeah but it's also more than twice the price, it's analog, and it doesn't have features like a compressor short cycle delay.

So you're running black to 3 and white to 4, correct? If you are and it's not powering on, I'd say you definitely got a bad one. The display on mine fired right up the second I plugged it in.

As I suspected, I was misinterpreting the wiring diagram included with the instructions. After some fiddling, I got everything to function correctly.

Thanks for everyone's response to my issue, please forgive my stupidity this time!
