I want to order some liquid yeast from AHS with the cold pack. The problem is the temps here are high 90s. The good news is because I live in Shreveport the cheap shipping from AHS arrives in one day. Will the yeast be OK?

If you make a starter upon arrival, you'll know. Most of the time the yeast arrives ok, but there's always an execption to the rules. So that's why making a starter is a good thing.

I ordered a pack of wyeast 1056 and forgot to order the cold packs. The yeast spent over a week in transport and I was sure they would be dead. I actually ordered a second smack pack before brewing. I used the new smack pack to make a starter but just for the hell of it smacked the old one. It puffed up in a couple of hours. So as they say results may vary but my guess is that unless its a really touchy yeast you would be fine.

I think you will be fine with one day. I've ordered yeast before and it took about 3 days in 90-100F heat to get here, the activator pack took several days to inflate but eventually I was able to make a starter that worked.

Just remember for next time, don't bother waiting for it to inflate.

From the Wyeast FAQ website:

3. Does the package need to be fully swollen before pitching?

No, The package can be pitched before activating, or at anytime during the activation process. The activation process "jump starts" the culture's metabolism, minimizing the lag phase.

Even if I'm uncertain that it's still viable?

Yeah, you'll know three days sooner next time if it's viable....you wont be wasting three days waiting for that puppy to inflate, or not. A starter will prove viability, AND reproduce the living cells into enough to brew with.

Think about it this way, if you were using whitelabs tubes, you wouldn't be waiting for something to inflate before making a starter, would you?

If youre that close.....your yeast will be fine...dont forget to order the cold pack!..if you're all that worried consider ordering a dry yeast like us-05 as a backup. Or make a starter..starters are always a good insurence policy.

I ordered Liquid yeast along with many other supplies, from Texas last week. Temps in NY were 90 + (yuck!) and it took 5 days to get here including the weekend. Made a starter and I have a nice Krausen going. I have never had any problem with dead yeast. Remember those little guys are survivors, living on this planet for many millions of years before us.

I'll second the other posts about it being nothing to worry about. I got a Wyeast 1332 shipped in a few weeks ago. It sat on the porch all day long in the 90+ degree heat(I live in Alabama) until I got home from work. I pitched it into a starter the next day and within 12 hours it had a nice thin krausen on the top. It made fine beer.
