So as the title say, I did something potentiall stupid, had all my hops laid out for an IPA (including the dry hops). Used up the last of my Nelson Sauvin as well.
So after the batch was finished and in the fermenter I grabbed the dryhops (NS & Pacifica) and through them in a spare ziplock bag. I now realise this bag used to have chocolate malt in it.
Am I asking for an infection (lacto from the grain) if I use these hops now, or would of the kilning/roasting of th grains kill off anything to be worried about.
Money is tight but I could possibly swing to get more NS, or just use the Pacifica alone with no NS (I have spare Pacifica)

Cheers :mug:

Are you using them for dry hopping or putting them in the boil? I'd guess you'll have no problems using them either way, but if you're going to put them in the boil that would kill anything that might be living in them.

Dry hopping with them. Yeah if they were boiled I would not have an issue, it is just the fact that with dry hopping I won't be able to sanitise them before throwing them into my beer :)
Cheers

you'll probably be fine. hops inhibit bacteria, and I doubt they got that much grain dust on them to matter.

I would still use them. I would think the extreme roast level of chocolate malt that there is not much living.

That is my initial thoughts and reasoning behind wanting to just use them... but I smelt the beer last night and it is smelling soooooooo good I would hate for this to be the acid test on if storing hops in old grain bags is ok :cross:
For the sake of $0.80 of hops I am going to go buy another bag of NS, because then I can put more than the 1/2 oz I had in there! How much total should I put in a IPA for dry hopping - 2 oz? It will be 50/50 NS & Pacifica.
Now it did have about 500ml of leftover trubby beer in the bottom of the keggle after transfering to the fermenter, so I collected it/chilled it/ seperated off the good beer from the now compacted trub in a 1 ltr bottle and pitched an old packet(!) of muntons yeast in there. The krausen has dropped this morning so I might give it a few more days and then drop an appropriate amount of the NS/Pacifica grain bag combo in there to see if it would have been ok :)

Just to let everyone know, I tried the extra wort beer and there seemed to be no sign of infection from using the choc malt grainbag hops! It did taste very green and like it was fermented too hot with crappy yeast... oh wait... it was :D
