Just ordered 8 lbs. Shipping weight is 13 lbs. I'm guessing I'm getting about 10 lbs of hops. Should arrive next Tuesday.
Shipping is OK. I like to buy several lbs to reduce the effect of shipping. If you buy several hops, the shipping is almost offset by the extra they give you in the order. 1 lb of pellets seems to be about 18 ozs, and 1 lb of leaf seems to be about 20 ozs.
I've bought from them a couple of times, and including shipping, hops cost me an average of $0.62 per ounce.
Buy hops you use a lot, or would like to use a lot. Buy a couple of neutral bittering hops too. Hops keep very well in the freezer; for up to a couple of years.
Who uses just 0.5 ozs of a hop in a beer?
I'll buy different hops just to try them. Bought a pound of Sorachi Ace, used about 4 ozs, but not sure what I want to use them for again; that was a poor purchase. Bought Mt Rainier, and used them in an APA with Centennial, and it is great; will use them up no problem.
I figure I'll make about 24 batches this year. I use about 5 ozs per batch (6.5 gallons) on average. On that basis I will use 7.5 lbs of hops this year. It will be another year before I buy any more hops.
