I am staged to start a 5 gal batch of English Pale Ale from a kit of LME, DME and steeping grains. I had planned to use a half tab of Whirlfloc in my last few minutes of wort boil. HOWEVER, in Palmer's How to Brew book, he states that whirlfloc is not recommended in extract kits.

Will my pale ale kit benefit from using a clairifier? Is this a firm "no-no" to use in an extract kit? Pros and cons?

Thank you for any advice!

I normally used one - and the kits from my LHBS included them. 1 tablet with about 15 minutes remaining in the boil.

Whirlfloc will not hurt your extract brew, it helps coagulate the cold break proteins.

Also, put it in with 5 minutes left in the boil, it works better that way. At 15 minutes, much of what makes it work is denatured.
