where to source full sacks of grain?

i was about to pull the trigger on a motorized mill when i realized that 50 lb sacks of grain dont qualify for free shipping. i dont think it will save me that much money without the ability to buy locally and pickup the grain.

If you ever see bags with free shipping, you better jump. You can buy 10 lb bags from Williams and buy enough to qualify for free shipping like some of us, though. Won't be as cheap as a bag by the pound, but less than many other places 1 lb at a time

Yes! Williams just had a sale on some malts. With 50# sacks, the shipping was over $60! Of course, that’s from CA to an Atlantic coast state. However, I ordered 8 10# sacks and got free shipping. (40# of two different malts.)
Catching this sale, and breaking it down into 10# bags, I got the same exact price as buying a 50# sack at the nearest brew supply. The difference was that this was delivered to my door. To get the sack, I would have to make a trip 60 miles to the store and back, so it would have cost me gas money and a lot of time.

Jeeze, I've been living in Malted Grain Shangri-La for so many years I've totally lost touch with what the retail price of base malts is now.
I'm still paying a buck a pound for a full bag for the likes of Golden Promise - delivered - through an HBT member with a BSG wholesaler card.
Meanwhile, Williams wants 2.70 a pound before shipping so even with the "free" shipping 50 pounds would cost $135

Rite Brew will put a 50lb sack of 2-row on my doorstep for $73, or 55lb Golden Promise for about $100.

But, I live in adjacent state where a regional delivery service costs less than UPS et al.

Oh, and I've never actually bought that much in a single crack cuz I don't brew very much/very often.

I used to order from Label Peelers occasionally sacks of grain. The grain was cheap and shipping somewhat reasonable.

But now I buy all my stuff from the last remaining homebrew shop in the Detroit area. Gotta keep them alive as long as possible! They have great prices on sacks of grain, but I don't think they ship. So not helpful...

Piggybacking on a craft brewer's grain order is definitely worth looking into. Also, the above-mentioned brew club idea.

It's been a while since I've ordered from Morebeer, but they used to include 10# bags in their free shipping. If they still do it, just order 5 of those.

My homebrew club piggybacks an order with a local brewpub's. I just got a 55 lb bag of Crisp #19 floor malted maris otter for $60.

the online issues might be 50/55# is too big for UPS/Fedex to offer a goor rate. But ordering say 5 or 6 10# bags allows the order to be split into 2 or more smaller packages

I'm not that much of a fan of this new version. They should call themselves The Steve Howe Band.

I got to see them live in 2002 when it was Anderson, Squire, Wakeman, Howe, and White. That was about the fifth time I saw them live. They put on quite a show.

LOL. They're not for everyone. Back in the day when CDs were king, I always had a few friends over for some brews, cards, a football game, whatever. I had this 5 disc changer and everyone would pic a CD from my collection or they brought their own if it was something new for us all to listen. I'd put the changer in shuffle mode and let her play. Needless to say, my brother (like me) is a huge Genesis fan and the rest of the guys would get pissed when "Supper's Ready" came on. 22 minutes of torture for them.
