Where else can I get lactose?

I am doing a double chocolate stout this weekend and I just stopped by the LHBS to pick up specialty grains and a couple of adjuncts, one of which is lactose. Turns out they are out of it. Grr. Anybody have any ideas as to what other stores might sell it?

What store did you stop at? I know that the Brew Hut in Aurora has it.

I stopped at Hops and Berries in Fort Collins. I suppose I could try to get down to Aurora tomorrow.

Look in a decent health food store. In my area I can get sugars cheaper at one of these.

In fact, stay there a while and get familiar. You'd be amazed what you can find that relates well to brewing.

Might also check the Beer and Wine at Home store on the North side. It's in Westminster off 121st, that way you don't have to drive as far. I know that they had some in stock within the last few weeks.

Thanks gilla. I was thinking I needed to try whole foods or GNC. Hopefully I won't have to make the trip to Denver, but I'm sure there are other reasons I could take the family up. Maybe the zoo or something.

It may not help you now, if it is not in stock, but for future brews, see about a health store that stocks NOW products. They should be able to order NOW lactose for a decent price.

Thanks for the advice all. I think I'm going to just do an ESB and put the chocolate stout off for a while.

IIRC, you can add the lactose at bottling. So you could always brew up your choco and pick up the lactose between now and when it's done fermenting.

Yeah, I thought about that. I ran into another problem, though. I was planning on doing a double batch with a friend who also wanted some of the stout. I guess I cut the delivery of the 15gal boil kettle a little close. UPS wouldn't leave the package at the front door without a signature, so I am stuck with the 10gal pot until Monday. My friend doesn't want any ESB, so I'll just do that one tomorrow. By the time I get to the stout, I should have the kettle and the lactose.
