When to complain?

Some of us have no alternative than to order yeast through the mail. When I do, I expect the yeast to be less than 2 months old.

The name calling and condescending replies are unnecessary and unacceptable.

If being called an "odd duck" from some random guy on the internet is going to ruffle your feathers then you fellas really need to RDWHAHB.

I don't know anyone that would take that as name calling or even an insult.

"0dd duck" doesn't really seem offensive to me. In fact, I hope people will start referring to me as Odd Duck. ;)
 
I hereby retract my previous name-calling. Let it be known that nealperkins is a perfectly normal duck. All offense to ducks and non-ducks is regretted. Pappers has always been and remains an odd duck.

I understand that some people have to buy over the internet, and there are two equally adequate solutions to this problem:
a) call the store and ask about their stock.
b) expect some variability in age and plan starters accordingly.

If two months seems unrealistically old, that's a complaint for Chris White or Greg Doss.

the problem with typed text is how we might read a certain attitude into the words that was never there. then again it might be. either way, i really like this song by king's x. i really like beer, and yeast are fun pets...and wood ducks are some of the coolest looking ducks around.

i hope the yeast in the op turn out to make some of the best beer in nealperkins has ever made.

Wouldn't you need more than a couple of days to step up to a 4L starter from one vial of yeast?

it would be fermented out on my stirplate in 24 hrs...

So since the OP has abandoned this thread I'm going to ask a question that I wanted to ask but didn't because I didn't want to get off topic.

Are you saying you can pitch 1 vial of White Labs yeast or 1 Wyeast smack pack into 4L of starter wort and since you're using a stir plate it will "ferment out" in 24 hours? What is the approximate ending yeast cell count when you do this?

I'm curious because I thought you needed to step up incrementally to 4L starters using progressively larger starters until you reached 4L. If you're saying you can skip all of these smaller steps and go straight to 4L starters then I must have misunderstood yeast starters and I'm getting a stir plate!

It might take longer than 24 hours (maybe 48) but you cann go straight to 4L.
 
If I have to buy yeast via mail order, I go with dry yeast. I assume being dried out makes it more temp stable, but I don't know that for a fact. Has anyone heard anything about that?

I do know dried yeasts compensate for diminished viability from drying by having higher cells counts than liquid yeasts.
