When to add flavouring extract

Hi guys, first post here. I am a beginner extract brewer from Qc, Canada (sorry for my english) I have 4 extracts kit made at time. It's not my first time here, i've read before and i found the forum really interesting.


So, yesterday i ordered a Belgian blonde kit, summer is coming so i'd like to add some lime flavouring extract in it. On the bottle it says add 4oz. for 5 gallons of beer. First, should i pour all 4oz. or should i taste the wort to be sure to get the taste i want. Secondly, when do you pour the extract? My thought would be at flame out at the end of boil? I am really not sure. Any thoughts? Thanks guys :mug:
 
I've tried both ways. In the secondary and at bottling. I've had better luck and much better taste adding at bottling.
Also be careful because the extracts I've used are super strong and too much tends to leave a real bad aftertaste. I've had better luck using half the amount called for. A light aftertaste is better than something barely drinkable.
And when I add at bottling I just add my priming sugar to my bucket then the extract.
I also forgot to mention to give it some extra time in the bottle to mellow the flavor out.
 
Like you said i am only doing primary so i'll try at bottling and i'll taste it. Thinking about it, it means i won't be able to stir the extract in my bottling bucket?..
 
You can stir it. Just gently tho. I add my priming sugar mix, then the extract and then rack on top of that. The motion from racking will created a little movement and then I use a sanitized spoon and add to that movement. Just a gentle whirlpool type stir will suffice.
 
Add at bottling.

4 ozs = 120 ml.

A standard teaspoon is 5 ml, or 1/24th of the 4 ozs.

I'm not sure what size batches you brew, or what size a standard bottle is in Canada, but if you take a simple larger and add a half teaspoon of extract to it, you can assess how much you need to use. If you have measuring spoons, you might have a quarter teaspoon, which might be good to start with.

In the US, standard batch is 5 US gallons, or ~ 50 standard 12 ozs bottles, so 4 ozs is pretty close to a half Tsp in a standard bottle.
