New to brewing and have been purchasing my ingredients from my LHBS and was wondering if I could save any money buying in bulk online. With shipping costs involved is it worth it?

- Buy cheap corona mill
- try to get in on bulk grain buys in your area
- buy hops by the lb online
- wash/harvest yeast

Depending on your definition of bulk and depending on the supplies and depending on the country you live in, yes.

Hops in bulk are most certainly cheaper in the US from a couple of online sources.

Palllets of grain are cheaper online than individual bags from the LHBS but few homebrewers can use a pallet of grain. This is why group buys are popular.

DME is cheaper in bulk but bulk DME has some handling issues for the average homebrewer.

LME in bulk is only sold by a few online retailers and is only moderately cheaper than ordering smaller jugs as needed.

I haven't tried them yet due to being overseas but as soon as I get home I am giving these guys a try. Free shipping on order's over $299 and they give a good discount for full sack purchases. If they have good service..... purchasing in bulk from them would be a considerable cost savings... Good for a group buy as well.

You probably will do best by shopping around, buying some stuff online, and some local. There is a shopping site called HomeBrewNinja that will check prices+delivery from different suppliers. Like expedia for homebrew. I buy hops in 4oz packs, a pound is cheaper by the ounce, but it's a lot of hops. I buy grain in 50lb sacks locally. Ninja shows I could have it delivered for about $53 a sack. My LHBS charges over $60. But there's another HBS 45 minutes away that only charges $51. I was over that way last week, I bought a sack. Anyway I do it, it's still way cheaper than buying craft beer.

This! Compare several sites for hop pricing. Find out which yeast you like and harvest or wash so you will always have some on hand.

In building my brewery and developing my processes I ended up identifying five house beers. They are the styles I enjoy most.

I then began to build my storage inventory around the ingredients used in the five styles. Using the principles moreb33 identified in the second post above my inventory holds hundreds of pounds of malt.

I brew 15.5 gallon batches and am planning a brew session next week. My cost including the purchase of 20 gallons of RO water and the propane is under $59.00.

For me, the most exciting part of this hobby has been to move from 5 gallon stove top brewing to a 15.5 gallon all grain single level two burner dedicated brew facility as cheaply as possible.

Have fun.

I have looked around and I cannot buy a sack of grain for less, online with shipping, than at my LHBS. I can't even get close. The shipping charges are the killer. Most flat rate deals do not cover bags of grain.

A local group buy is the way to go for grain. Hops in bulk, harvest and reuse yeast or start a frozen yeast bank and you will save quite a bit there.

My LHBS doesn't offer a cost break on full sacks... WTF?

It's cheaper for me to buy the 10lb bags from MoreBeer. As long as I spend $60 at a time, shipping is free.

I started buying hops by the pound online which has been much cheaper than buying by the ounce. Also I began harvesting yeast but haven't tried using it yet. Soon , sooon, BWAHAHAHA!!

Buy base malt by the sack. Get a couple food-grade 5-gallon buckets and Gamma Seal lids to store it. Check out some of your nearby homebrew clubs, as they might do group buys. Having a grain mill means you can keep the grain whole until you need it to brew and it will store much longer.

Buy frequently-used hops by the pound and keep them in an airtight container in the freezer.

Usually buy equipment online, bulk hops online, harvest washed yeast, and buy grain in "bulk" from my LHBS. My LHBS does a card system where you deposit $50 for 50 lbs of 2-row - they also have a mill which I use when I buy my grain.

Check Love2Brew, they have free shipping over $75 including grain, but not for full sacks of grain, and other heavy/bulky items.
