Whats a false bottom for?

It is a filter to separate the wort from the grain inside a mash tun. It has holes in it so the wort will fall through while leaving the grain behind. Then it goes through your spigot.

Interesting, I bought a brewpot on Craigslist a while ago with a false bottom. I've never even considered what it was doing in my brewpot. I use a cooler for my mashtun.

I guess I have no need for this false bottom
 
Well I just got a plate chiller on Craigslist so I am using a hop spider to filter right now....
 
IF its a big false bottom, keep it. large ones cost over 70 bucks. Good to have when you upgrade from a cooler to SS mash tun. (if you do),
