I've been an all grain brewer for 20 years and I've been a beekeeper for about 8 years but have never made mead. Pulled off 9 gallons of honey this summer so was wondering what to make. Any suggestions? I'm going to start reading about how to do it. Any suggested reading places on the web?

This forum is a great place, as well as Gotmead. I also suggest picking up a copy of Ken Schramm's "Compleat Meadmaker".

As far as a "first mead", you can't go wrong with JAOM. "Joe's Ancient Orange Mead".

cheers,

Say what?! How is this even possible?

Anyway, it really depends on what you like or what you want to get out of it. Berry melomels are pretty straightforward and delicious. If you have a favorite varietal, might be good to brew a traditional to show it off.

Yes, I would agree gotmead.com is a good place to go to learn about mead.

Ancient Orange mead is mad good and badass, to say the least. I have had much success with it because you can add spices to the recipe easily. I had better make another batch of Ancient Orange sometime soon, so I'll keep everyone posted.

There is cyser you should try.
It's honey+apple+apple juice maybe some water added.
Actually I never tasted it but I'm going to make cyser in this winter.

I would suggest trying a one gallon batch to start off with cause hey if it turns out you don't even like your own product no use in wasting all that honey.
