What brew toy should I buy next?

  • Crankandstein CGM-2S

  • B3 Superchiller

  • Don't be a pansy, buy 'em both

  • Ralph Nader, he can grind grain and chill wort at the same time

Pistol Wavin' New Haven, for now...
Here's the deal, I need an immersion chiller, a better grain mill, and a mash tun. Lately I've spent a butt load of money on brewing as well as on my other expensive hobbies, so I'm limiting myself to around $100 on brewing equiptment for the next month or so.

I figure the mash tun is a definite and I can make one fairly cheap. I have a corona mill but it's really tough to get a good grind, it's either too coarse or too fine... So, this is the mill that I want http://www.crankandstein.com/cgm2s.htm and this is the chiller I want http://morebeer.com/view_product/19521/102204

Which of the 2 should I get first? I've sat here and debated it by myself and can't make up my mind... So I figured I'd open it up for discussion and buy whichever one wins the poll:mug:

I said buy them both, but if you need to make a choice you need to make a choice. Do you have a chiller? If not, you NEED one. The Corona mill will work and you can always buy crushed grain, so the mill is a luxury.

I agree, if you're going to full mashes then the wort chiller is far more important than a mill (since you already have one). On the other hand buying both is better than choosing. :D

Make a Mash Tun AND a chiller! The copper tubing is only about 50.00 and the fittings are cheap. If ya dont wanna do the fittings, just buy a cheap as hell hose and cut the ends off. Hose clamp the living hell outta em.

aww man, I just voted but hadn't read that you already have a mill. In that case, I'd say chiller.

There's a guy on ebay selling nice chillers for $40 including shipping and $60 left over for a mash tun is enough.

Fermentation temps are extremely important.

I bet you get a lot more off flavors from a hot ferment than you do with a single infusion with a little over-milled grain.

You should also get a settling tank if you're going to use a couter flow chiller. Even if you get the wort to 40F, you're still going to have funk in your wort.

Just my 2 cents (2.131 cents Canadian)

Ditto...get the dang chiller...but don't buy one...make one....they're easy peasy...then think about going with a CFC and make it hard on yourself.

I had fun building my CFC. I went with full sweated joints instead of getting threaded pieces. Mostly because I had the parts laying around but also because it was just fun. :)

Man! You're getting pulled in all directions! I can speak from experience with the B3 Superchiller. You WON'T get that much copper with fittings for that price unless someone hooks you up. If you can, then you probably won't build one that looks that nice. BTW, the ones on EBAY for $40 are probably 3/8 X 25'. I have both sizes and it's like David & Goliath. Get that chiller, brutha!

I agree. You NEED a chiller or you gonna end up with enough bad batches to have paid for both the mill and chiller!

$89 for a shirron, out chills any tubular type chiller........yes folks, I've timed them all
