So I'm new at this, haven't even bottled by first batch yet and already I'm hooked. After reading through the threads I've realized the importance of temperature control.
Currently I have a mini fridge, a regular sized fridge with the freezer on top, and know of someone willing to get rid of a large freezer chest. All of them not currently being used. My question to you is what should I do with them?

mini fridge- fermentation chamber/beer storage
regular sized fridge with the freezer on top - beer/ferm chamber, yeast storage, hops storage in freezer
chest freezer - keezer

Well first thing is your a lucky fella to have them.I would make one a fermentation chamber and another one into a kegerator.

I wouldn't use them. I think it's best to just get rid of them. In fact, I could properly recycle them for you if you want to send them to me ;)

What sort of temperature controlling devices would I need to accomplish this?

ah yes i do have a Johnson temperature controller on my amazon wish list. I also like the idea of being to change the original thermostat, a fun diy. what about beers that ferment at higher temperatures. An ale is suppose to ferment at 68°? how would i be able to regulate the temperature above ambient using the fridge. I'm guessing i would need some sort of wrap and a separate temperature controller.
Also to take this thread on a tangent, I see people with graphs of their ferment temperatures. that's neat, how do i do it?

Or eBay STC-1000. 110v for USA

+1 to eBay temperature controller.

That's the cheapest and it works. I have one. Additionally I have an eBay temperature controller that works in series with the power point for my brew belt. Both are great.
