A "suspicious" looking shipment of hops including Citra, Mosaic, Ariana, Elixir, Nelson Sauvin, HBC 522, Meridian, and Motueka. My pound of Nelson came in not so airtight so I broke out the vacuum sealer and went to work while the kids watched Wicked. My machine isn't very quiet so I got an earful right around "Popular".

Excited to build recipes around these for the foreseeable future.

Don't want to bump the thread too much but forgot to mention today I got my NB Blackberry Milkshake IPA kit (which I'm tweaking to try and put a dent in my 8 pounds of hops I just bought so my wife can have the shelf back in the freezer eventually, I'm thinking meridian), my first hop spider, my first spin plate for starters, and a shirt from the Omega merch shop! Tomorrow I'm expecting an aeration wand, brewing salts, scale and a few craft books! It's like second Christmas at my house right now! My beautiful loving spouse is ready to tactically aquire my debit card but it's worth it.

My loving spouse agreed to the purchase of an extra fridge to help avoid these situations. I've pretty much got the freezer for hops, while she has the fridge section for things like curing bacon. I find it difficult to complain about this situation!

Oh, and a copy of Randy Baril's "Hosting Cask Ale Events"
Short book but a good primer on all things related to cask ale.

I keep a couple new lids in stock, never know when you need to replace the whole thing.
I’ve never had every keg filled so I grabbed one to switch out, and I have a couple with the valve drilled out to use with an airlock- kegmentor. I should probably make an entry in the Don’t do that thread, as well.

Yesterday…
I’m going to try a few US grown varieties of German hops to see how they compare since the AA on the imported ones suck so bad right now.
Except there's no hops of German origin in your photo.... The only one that's close is US Tettnang, but that appears to have nothing to do with German Tettnang, it's derived from the Swiss "Tettnanger" from the USDA collection (USDA 61021) which is probably some kind of Fuggle derivative - it's got a different coloured bine to Tettnang and everything.

German hopgrowers had a really rough 2022, and a not great 2023, but the 2024 vintage should be rather better so watch out for that. And go for the more modern varieties which cope much better with drought than the traditional landraces.

I don't think I've ever seen US versions of German hops in Europe so I can't try that one but I've swapped out 50% of the bittering charge with Magnum, especially when late hops are required where I can get the target aromas.
I'd be very interested to know how it works it using US varieties.

I have around twenty kegs, all the real old Pepsi style that first came available, so I keep a good stock of replacement items including the lids.

Emergency water is stored in some, emergency beer in the others.

I just received an Amazon order--2 pairs of heavy-duty rubber gloves to replace my almost worn out Blingmann gloves, and a couple watch glasses. But Amazon decided to combine those items with 3 reams of printer paper that was part of a separate order. All loose, in a larger carton. Amazingly, the watch glasses arrived intact.

A 100ml pycnometer from Amazon. For measuring SG, and to calibrate my hydrometers. It came with a test certificate--actually 101.453ml. Do I really need it for home brewing? Not really. But I like gadgets, so this will be interesting to play with.

I assume the calibration is at 20°C (based on the flask labeling.) Did they give you any info on temperature coefficient for volume variation? Do you have a calibrated scale to use with the flask?

Brew on :mug:

No temp coefficient, just the certified volume of 101.453ml at 20C. I'll just have to make sure my samples are cooled to 20C. My scale is not calibrated, it's a digital gram scale with resolution to 100ths of a gram. I did test the bottle with 20C distilled water and weighed it on my scale, and factored water density at that temp. The measured volume came within about .02 ml of the certified volume.

Probably cheaper than the jukebox I bought, not as cool looking though.

We live gadgets!
