Some coffee while logging into work and listening to the rain. Glad I work from home. Freeways are shut down and school is cancelled from the storm. Never seen so much water in the desert before.

Second cup of coffee. Oldest daughter's 27th birthday...it's amazing how I can forget what I had for lunch yesterday, but I can remember her birth so clearly. Trying to wake up the younger ones, on track out break from year 'round school, to go to lunch with their sister.

Starter for my latest cider (harvested Edinburgh Ale Yeast) seems to be going just fine. Pitching tonight.

Awesome! Today's my youngest's 5th birthday. Poor girl got an ear infection as a present.

Regular Coke with lunch. Damn store is out of my beloved cherry coke.

Time for some gravity samples. From top to bottom: Brett Pale Ale, Oatmeal Stout, Columbus/Cascade/Mosaic IPA, Pumpkin Ale.

How do you take your samples? I feel like I've been getting small amounts of oxidation when I check my FG. My wand seems to drip wort back into the carboy and I feel like this is having ill effects.

Put the thief in and angle it toward the side of the bucket. I make sure the end is pressed so that beer fills the thief and at that point, the thief has enough beer in it for me to take a gravity reading. The thief will fill as high as it is deep.

I hate my thief for that very reason - always drips all over. When I take a sample now, I either use my mini auto-siphon (no drips there) or I just use my turkey baster since that sucker just works!

I also usually go with the turkey baster. No CO2 after.

Autocorrect wanted me to go with turkey badger. A turkey badger would not be a good tool for taking gravity samples.

Ha!! And a +1 to the turkey baster. Even with drips from the auto-siphon you shouldn't worry about oxygenation though, especially if you are bottling the beer.

Tapped the next polypin of Summer Ale. If I'd gone with some combo of Simcoe or Centennial or Citra or Cascade or Galaxy or Mosaic or any of these other hops instead of Challenger and EKG, I could pass this off as an American Pale Ale.

Pull off of this poly - El Viernes 13 pale.

Steak kabobs grilling on this here swill.

A large bottling sample of this years batch of vanilla pumpkin porter. This recipe is set going forward - should be great in 3-4 weeks. :mug:

Now off to a Cub Scout parent advisory meeting...

Mystery beer showed up at my house today. I haven't really taken stock yet but one looks like a commercial variation of apfelwein with honey and cherries? Another is a Belgian Lambic of some sort. These are outside my wheelhouse of beer knowledge.

After a couple hofbrau munich dunkel liters at the bar in the best german restaurant in city of New York on to a little something more representative of 'Murica.ImageUploadedByHome Brew1410216868.030483.jpg
