Here’s the second of the 4 Altbiers sporadically available in Southern California.

Altbiers have a cousin-relationship with Kölsch, both beers coming from the same region – Kölsch coming from Cologne (Köln, and thus the name Kölsch) and Altbiers originating about 25 miles North, up the Rhine at Düsseldorf.

Both are Ales which use a special low-temperature (by Ale standards) yeast, and cold conditioning for several months.

When last I spoke “Altbier,” I was having conniption fits over the wimpish glassware we’re supposed to drink Altbier from. Research allows us to firmly point the extended index finger squarely at the ancient Düsseldorf Brewers Guild, who appear to have been responsible for the childish little quarter-liter size glass.

In this case, we can’t even fit a US pint size beer into it without having to re-fill. Why would they do this to their own people for crying out loud!

Me thinketh it all boils down to selling more glassfuls of brew, what do you think? Drinkers of the world, UNITE! No more of these pathethic little drinks, bring out the big barware!

Anyway, I’ve lavished on Three Weavers before with their fabulous 5% ABV Volksbier. This is a fantastic brew, pick some up when you can! Prost!

Husband was at a bowling tournament at Angel of the Winds Casino yesterday, they host 210 Brewing and he brought this one home. I'm a bit IPA'd out so thought a nice blonde would be appropriate. Didn't know it was a Belgian or I may have demurred, but glad he got it. Very tasty.

Last time I was there, the waiters were very attentive and kept bringing glasses as soon as I emptied one. They were pretty cheap too, only a couple euros per glass.

Going to take a wild guess and say Andromeda and the Whirlpool? Moon filter definitely helps.

Nailed it..

Edit, I have a moon filter but what I meant was the moon took away from the ability to see the the galaxy as much as you can during new moon. .. we got a close view of the moon tonight at dusk, was nice.

I have a photo of the Cigar galaxy...I think. Try to find it.

Wife is into the Netflix Receiver series. Needs another beer...

HB Best Bitter. This one is fantastic. I am going to give it another go and drop down the crystal a bit more. However I need to clear this keg so I can get the other bitter that's cold crashing a home. Oddly the Omega 006 British Ale did not flocculate as it claimed it would, hoping the cold crash will settle it all out.

Well, Alaskan Amber is the third of the four Altbiers currently available here. There isn’t going to be a fourth. The fourth will be Alt-Bier Ale by Hangar 24 Brewing of Redlands, California if I can ever find it. I’ve looked everywhere and can’t find a bottle. Let me know if you have one! Southern California is now an Altbier desert!

Alaskan Amber is a tasty 5.3% ABV Amber Ale, produced in the Altbier style. That would mean Alt yeast, continental malts and hops. Looking at the Alaskan website, this one actually uses a mixture of European and Pacific Northwest hops. We don’t know the mix, but this is frequently done to take advantage of the European lineage of some of the hops produced in Oregon and Washington.

At 18 IBU, the hop levels are a bit restrained, as most Altbiers these days are in the 25-50 IBU range, malty and hoppy… This one not quite so hoppy.

Based on a Gold-Rush era recipe from Douglas City Brewing Company, Alaskan won a 1988 “Best Beer in the Nation” – that’s what I call picking up the mantle and taking this great beer forward! Easy to locate, this is a great beer, go get it!

Looks delicious. Now I’m thinking about brewing another one, it’s been a while. Last one I fermented with Imperial Pub A09 and it dropped like a rock.
