HB Scottish ale. About 17 months in the bottle, it has developed some subtle molasses notes that I really like. Only a couple left.

Summertime is here, and along with the heat comes my, er, OUR thirst! Days like this I enjoy a nice tart Sour Ale. Something about that acidity makes all sorts of tart summer beverages shine – a pitcher of Margaritas for example, or a Lemony Fizz. Anything with that “tart thing” going on! Bring on the heat!
Today’s sipper is one of my personal home brews – a Karl Strauss Red Trolley clone, but with a twist – finished with some Lacto for a nice sour note. I was inspired to make this beer after drinking one I had at the local Karl Strauss brewery and restaurant. They had this version of Red Trolley, I think they called it “Sour” Trolley or something like that. It was also aged in Cabernet barrels and picked up this cool reddish color. Red Trolley, redder than usual with a slightly sour note. Awesome Summertime Drink!!!!
So it goes, we stand on the shoulders of giants. I can’t claim this is better than theirs, but it definitely was inspired by that glass of Sour Ale at Karl Strauss. Great Beer… Cheers!

Brewery X Citra Loves Nelson. I bought this when it first came out and they had a Shel Silverstein "The Giving Tree" label. It's different now, I wonder if they hit for copyright infringement? Tasty beer, no matter how you wrap it.

Happy Fourth of July to everyone a bit late I know.
Is it California Pilsner or is it Austrian Pils? Boy, that’s a toughie. Austria’s fantastic Trumer Brewery has the finest domestically produced Pilsner in America – 18 Gold medals to prove it. I had the opportunity to visit Trumer in Berkeley, California. Yes, that Berkeley - home of campus radicals and pointy-headed intellectuals. One of my Daughters is high-tailing it out of Berkeley, what the heck is going on? Now home of fine Pilsner, who figured?
Actually, said Daughter is moving on in academic circles, so onward and upward! I had a funny conversation with her – she was actually living near Trumer in El Cerrito at the time. El Cerrito was the home of rock band Creedence Clearwater Revival, one of her favorites, and mine. “Dad, did you know Creedence was also from El Cerrito? I thought they were from Bajou Country!” Funny thing is, I thought that too! This from a 20-something – Fogerty would be proud!
I think the domestic product has to be a bit different that the Austrian brew, just over the border from Bavaria. One difference is the open fermentation at the Austrian Mothership – what does that do to the flavor? To investigate, I was looking for some big yeasty foamy vat when I was in Berkeley, I was really interested – but the beer tender there disclosed they have closed fermentation! Huh? Is this the same brew or what? Anyway, it is what it is, and what it is - is FANTASTIC!!!! Best Pils in America! Prost!
