Another San Diego area brewer, Eppig Brewing out of Vista makes their 6% ABV, 16 ounce tall boy of Festbier, their version indicating “Less malty than a Märzen, more complex than a Pilsner” on the can. Well, I might maybe change that to less “hoppy” than Pilsner. I’ll leave the “complex” to you brewing experts out there!
I’m beginning to sound like a skipping record here, but so many of these West Coast Lagers are suffering from a lack of fining. I feel like I’m walking in the fog, every day! Really, these brews should be crystal clear. This level of cloudiness again makes me think the brew crews aren’t polishing them to the level usually enjoyed by their Teutonic cousins. Maybe they don’t read German!
Other than the cloudiness, this is a tasty Festbier. Not much in the way of head or lacing, and I think this one is carbonated a touch lower than usual. So I’d suggest four tweaks for purists – flavor is fine, work on the fining, bring up the carbonation a half volume or so, head and lacing is nice and needs to be there. A report card for brewers! Prost!

I'm a purist...^^^. This HB IPA is purely awesome with some hop oil added.

Great to see somebody is paying attention. So right when I was going to give up all hope for my Faux German Brewing project, along comes Three Weavers Brewing out of Inglewood, California. Attention California Lager brewers – This is how you make a Faux German beer!
Volksbier, or “People’s Beer” on these shores is a FANTASTIC 5% ABV Altbier. Yes, I said Altbier, how often does that style crop up around here? Literally “Old Beer” it refers to an old style of Ale originated in Düsseldorf, Germany back, back, back, back in the grungy old pre-Lager days. Still using continental malt and hops, Altbier is darker and coppery in color and is cold conditioned for months, just like the rest of the "distant cousin" Lager beers. Main diff is it’s an ALE, not a Lager! They were Lagering before Lager! This is the way to drink in the 1400’s!!!
Three Weavers lets it all hang out too, rattling off the build sheet right on the can. Premium Pilsner, Vienna, Dark Wheat, Caramunich and Carafa II malts. Hops are restrained, but not listed. I’m guessing maybe Hallertau Mittelfrüh, but in a malt-forward beer like this, most is in the bittering charge, so you have some flexibility there. WLP-029 yeast is used.
Nice head, fantastic clarity, great lacing. Did I say clarity? CLARITY by the keg-full! I can’t say enough about this one, if you are looking for an authentic German Altbier, THIS IS IT!!!! Prost!

So.... I finished my second IPA. was settling into my recliner ready to watch home improvement retruns, when the BOSS, very nicely asked me if I could hang the "summer" drapes after I removed the" winter drapes" "this weekend- she KNOWS I want to rottotill the garden tomorrow and put up the critter fence, she KNOWS, I want go trout fishing Saturday morning and get my boat ready to put it in its slip.. so I hung drapes- TONIGHT- lucky for me, she knows how I think, once the last drape was hung, my reward, in the shape of a home brew coffee porter- life is GOOD!

If I had to choose one beer...one beer above all others, this would be the one: HB Session IPA with Citra, Mosaic and Simcoe. 5.2%, 53 ibu. Fortunately, I have 7 others on tap ;-)
That does sound (and look) delightful. I'm planning a modern hoppy ale again and I don't have a lot of experience with Mosaic, do you mind me asking what your ratios are? I'm assuming the hop schedule leans on the whirlpool and dry hops?
