Can I use weed killer around my hips and next to my hips to kill the weeds under them and stuff or no? If so what's the best weed killer for it?

Personally I would not, because my hips are too valuable to me.

I spread black plastic sheeting around the bases of my hop plants in my bed which keeps weeds in check without chemicals. Here's a picture from back in March:

I personally dont have any problems with chemical weed killers such as Round Up and Preen. Obviously you dont want to get either on your hops. If you are looking for more organic solutions, try vinegar in place of Round Up, and corn gluten meal (Preen even sells this as their organic weed product) as a pre-emergent.

Leave some space around the base of the plants, then mulch so that you wont have problems in the future. If you put down some corn gluten meal ever spring and once or twice throughout the summer, it will work pretty well.

if you use it around your hips watch getting it on your junk :)

that being said be careful to use the right weed killer as some are selective others are non selective

I see people here with hop farms using bark mulch, in my vegetable gardens I just use my grass clippings

sometime between the rows I do use black plastic

all the best

Haha my phone always spellchecks hops to hips sry bout that and thanks for your info guys!!!

If you really feel the need to use a weed killer, use a non-selective one like Roundup, carefully, on a sponge. A light wipe over the leaves of the doomed plant will do it, and it won't leave any residual effects.

Almost all the weed killers generally available are targeted at Broad Leaf plants, and many of them also have some residual effect that WILL effect the hops.

Personally, I figure three or four minutes every other week pulling a few weeds, is easier. :)

Hand pulling is generally preferred but if things get away from you, you may need some help. I've used both selective and non-selective with good results. If you don't use herbicides very often, please read and understand the label. Using some sort of spray shield around the crowns to reduce potential drift problems may also be helpful like a large piece of cardboard. Happy Hopping~

Once you get rid of the weeds, do yourself a favor and use some kind of mulch to keep them from coming back. Plastic does a good job but news paper, leaves, straw, sawdust, grass clippings or some other form of natural material will decay and ad much needed nitrogen to the soil bed the hops are growing in.

I use glyphosate around the edges of my asparagus beds. Applying with a soft sponge, stapled to a stick, works the best. Use the sponge to wet most of the leaves. Nylon bristle brushes drip and don't hold much.

Glyphosate is generic Roundup®, but half the price.
