If you buy those $10 digital oven thermometers and use them in any kind of liquid the probes die very quickly. The first one I bought lasted two brews after getting dunked in the wort.

You don't need to buy a $100 thermometer to get waterproofness.

I made a short video about how to solve this problem yourself in about 10 minutes. You need some silicone gasket maker and heat shrink tube, plus a lighter or heat gun to shrink the tube.

My repair typically waterproofs the probe until the headphone jack breaks where it plugs into the thermometer body or corrodes so badly it won't work any more. But that's on the order of 50 batches, not 3. I've also used the same probe on roasting chicken and other 450+ degree jobs and it still works great. It's even been through the dishwasher (when I wasn't watching someone clean up...) and still works fine.
