I'm going to try adjusting the water profile for the first time with my next batch. I'm starting with RO water and using Beersmiths water adjustment tool. Where it calls for the amount of water I'm confused. Should I be adjusting the full volume of water or just the strike water and sparge with plain RO?

Cheers!

I never used beersmith water adjustment tool...but i always adjust my mash water and sparge water Separately...hopefully martin chimes in he is a water expert. speaking of martin check out bru n water its pretty easy to get a grasp on..but i dont think you want to treat the full volume equally..treat the mash volume accordingly then treat the sparge accordingly cheers

I'm not really sure if the mineral calculator in BeerSmith provides any guidance on how to dose acid or alkali in the mash to produce a desired pH. I know the mineral calculator in ProMash only provides a guide on how much of various salts to add to the water to produce a desired ionic concentration in the brewing water. I'm sure that Beersmith is doing at least this. I can tell you that Bru'n Water does that and it provides guidance for your acid or alkali additions in the mash that are critical to producing a desirable mashing and wort pH.

Beersmiths water tool does address PH though I had to look around and it's in the mash section. It doesn't have anything separate about strike and sparge water though. I have the free version of Bru'n Water and I'll have to check it out.

Cheers!

The free version will tell you what sort of dosing should be done (in both the strike and sparge waters).

Sort of off topic, but how does one get the "paid" version? I went to the donation site and sent some money (no clue how much is expected) but didn't get any sort of link for a different version. Just curious really.

Martin will email it to you. Mine arrived about 3 - 4 days after I sent him the donation.

Thanks, just wasn't sure how it worked. Wasn't complaining about sending a little bit of money (even if just for the "free" version). Just didn't know if I was missing something.
