I have washed yeast for the first time and have 7 small mason jars now (frome 2 separate batches).

My question is should I make a yeast starter more in advance of my planned brew day? I typically make a yeast starter 24 hours or so before I brew but I am thinking the washed yeast make take a little longer to get going.

Thanks

I just made a starter with washed yeast for the first time on tuesday. Thought it would give it time to get going. Will cool it down friday morning to taste it friday night to make sure it is good (gives me the chance to hit the store for a smack pack saturday if I need to). After that I was going to add more wort to let it rip through to sunday to get pitched.

On a side note I was surpised how long the starter took to get going (24 hours, thought it would be faster).

4 days of fermenting would be if you wanted to decant the liquid off of the starter and just add the slurry. If you don't have that kind of time, then you can just make the starter like 12-24 hours before brewday and pitch the whole starter (which will be at high krausen). Are you using a calculator to determine your pitching rates? If you are, just use enough slurry so that all the starter does is "revive" the yeast prior to fermentation, not increase the cell count.
