I have a passive device that lets me listen to my stereo in the garage, backyard, front porch and living room. Unfortunately it's tough to balance so that it doesn't shut the receiver down, and I'm currently only using two sets of speakers. Does anybody have a suggestion on some sort of powered device(pre amp or amp for instance) that will let me play all four without shutting the receiver down?

I'm assuming you are using a speaker selector type of device? If so does it have impedance matching (usually a switch labeled "protect" or something similar on the back)? It sounds like whats happening is that you are driving enough speakers that the resistance is getting too low for your receiver to handle. If you have the manual for your receiver it should tell you how many speakers of a given type you can drive safety. I use a Niles unit for my whole house audio and am able to drive 5 rooms at once without much problem. Yes the volume gets less as I drive more speakers but usually it is for a party or when people are over so not a big deal.
