I brewed, and pitched, my second batch of beer last night (5/4) at around 8pm. I figured that by now I should be seeing CO2 coming from the airlock. But as of 7am this morning (5/5), nothing. I am being too impatient? When should I expect to see CO2 being released from the airlock?

I brewed this beer in a 6 gallon better bottle. Here is the recipe.

Ingredients
4 lb. Alexanders Pale Malt Extract
3 ½ lb. Bierkeller Light Malt Extract
½ lb. Weyermann Munich Malt 6° L
½ lb. Durst Crystal Malt 40° L
½ lb. Weyermann Caramunich III 70° L
½ lb. Muntons Carapils 20° L
2 oz. Centennial Hops (Bittering)
1 oz. Cascade Hops (Flavoring)
1 oz. Tettnang Hops (Flavoring)
2 oz. Cascade Hops (Finishing)
Wyeast # 1056XL American Ale

What temp is your wort? Wyeast is liquid, right? Did you make a starter? Either way, wait at least 72 hours before you even think something's wrong...

Best thing you can do is drink a beer about it.

Also, check out the stickies at the top of the begginer's forum. Good stuff there.
 
Take a look at it. There is probably a thick layer of foam on top of your beer. In that case, you are good to go.

That's a good suggestion. I didn't really take a look to see if I have any foam on top, but I'll do that when I get home for the evening. However, how long should I wait before I start to get worried that the yeast wasn't any good. I'm a little nervous because I didn't make a starter, so I can't verify that the yeast was alive before I pitched. I know, I know, beginner mistake.
 
Wyeast 1056 should be good up to 1.060 for 5 gallons. The package is dated.

Without a starter, the yeast spends more time in the propagation phase where it simply reproduces to get ready to make beer. This is not accompanied by airlock activity.

In a better bottle, it should be very obvious when fermentation starts.

And yes, 12 hours is being impatient.

I guess I was being impatient. When I got home last night the beer was bubbling like crazy, and when I got up this morning, I had a partial blow off. The coloring of the beer looks FANTASTIC, and the aroma of the CO2 coming out of the fermentation chamber smells, outstanding. Here's to a hoppy IPA.
 
Am curious where he got it from as well -- found this thread looking for a recipe and foudn this one her and they are slightly different

Are you going to bottle it here, in a few days? Let us know how it is, and if its good, the boil schedule so I can make it sometime :)
