Vegan beer?

Vegans can be as annoying as those people from the Westboro Baptist Church.

Not all though. My friend is oveweight and recently went vegan. I'm not sure it's because of her weight, or something to do with her belief system, but she doesn't promote it beyond asking questions about any food prepared by someone else. She has made a mushroom burger (the patty is a slice of portabella) that looked good, but when I cooked one up to try it was pretty nasty.

My daughter went vegetarian for lent and most of the stuff she ate was pretty good, although she was very eager to have a cook-out by the end of it!

MalFet: "Who cares what she eats and doesn't?"

excactly,, but its more about when they make the big circus sideshow out of everything. I dont think I've yet seen a vegwhatever that has not put on the big display for all to see when about to eat anything.
just eat what ever the frick your gonna eat, and leave me out of it, I could care less about your moralities of eating things.

All I see in this thread is non-vegans making a big circus sideshow about how circus-sideshowy vegans are. The OP didn't say anything about the misbehaviors of his vegan friends, and yet out of the woodwork comes anti-vegans with a bone to pick.

Punny! :D

I think it's a load of crap, personally. Vegans eat marmite and "nutritional yeast" which is a good source of B vitamins.

The only thing I can think of is that they filter it because that's how they clear it w/o gelatine.

Gelatine is a no no for strict vegans, but yeast? No... I've never heard any of my vegan friends complaining about beer.

+1. Having an ideological stick up your ass has nothing to with diet.

Stick a stubborn omnivore in an all vegetarian (or better yet all vegan) restaurant, and they'll whine just as much as a vegan taken to a steakhouse. I eat meat myself, and yeah, some vegans can be really obnoxious. But don't act like they're the only ones.

That said, my vegan friends respect the fact that every once in a while I'll brew something that's not vegan. I let them know which brews are vegan friendly, and which ones are not. And everyone's good. No dogma, no hissy fits.

You must be spending time with the wrong people. I was vegan* for over 10 years, and most people I knew either didn't know, or thought I was allergic to dairy or eggs. It was a personal decision for me to make, and I didn't feel the need to discuss it with anyone else. I didn't mind the topic coming up, but I only rarely raised it myself.

I'll also reiterate what others have said. Yeast is a fungus, vegans eat fungi, so yeast is just fine for vegans. There really isn't anything else to say on the matter.

*Well, mostly vegan. I ate honey. I referred to myself as a "F**k the bees" vegan.

Didn't read pages 2 or 3, but along with gelatine being a no-no for vegans, isinglass is also not something a vegan can use to clear beer. It's made from the swim bladder of a fish...

I wonder how many vegetarian beer judges drink beer with gelatin or isinglass without knowing it?

For the record my vegan friends have never once lectured me on veganism or questioned me as to why I eat meat. I respect their beliefs and they don't give a crap what I put in my body.

So your stereotype is simply that, nothing more.

I do NOT want to see any more vegan bashing posts. This is a beer discussion, not a bashing thread. Please keep on topic, thanks!

I do not use any finings (except whirlfloc in the kettle) in my beer. Partly because I don't want animal products in my beer- I want a vegan/vegetarian friendly beer.

Another option for clarifying beer that is vegan friendly is ice-stabilization. It was pioneered by Molson. Apparently it is more effective than filtering and fining combined. I don't think it would be very easy to do at home.

Got a couple of seriously vegan friends. Not one has ever complained about beer. One guy even brewed a batch or two some years ago. Anyone telling you yeast isn't vegan is absolutely full of sh*t.

I'm a vegetarian. My beer is vegan friendly. My post is Yooper friendly.

Yeast is sold at health food stores as nutritional yeast and/or yeast flakes and is an excellent source of protein and B complex vitamins.

^^^ ha ha this guy, I like this guy.

I had an ethics class in college. Animal Sciences 597 I think.... Anyway, half the class was hardcore vegans. Not the kind that are that way for dietary reasons. And the other half were farmers. It was an awesome class. They brought in members from ALF to speak on behalf of PETA one day. The cops had to escort them out. It was great.

What part of BFE Ohio are you from?

The real question will be...Since being a vegetarian is a choice in diet, will the vegetarians eat whatever food they can find or starve once the zombie apocalypse begins?

Oops, sorry yoop, didn't read your no bashing post before I posted, I will return to my non-caring stance and allow everyone to eat everything without any of my judgment or persecution.:mug: I mean for all we know the yeast may be mutated to the point where WE are their food.

I haven't seen anything in this thread about it.. but I'm curious about if Diatomaceous earth is vegan/vegitarian. I know some breweries use it in filtering.

Vegans? I've never seen Mr. Spock drink a beer anyway! Why worry about brewing for extra terrestrials that we haven't even meet yet anyway!?

Central Ohio. West of Columbus, east of Springfield.

I really isn't "BFE", but I usually think I'm funnier on the internet than I really am. In fact, I'm accepting submissions for my new "witty location".
