I must admit, I am not a member of AHA yet, but did get 6 copies of Zymurgy mag off ebay ..

The mag itself seems worth the price of admission ... are there any other benefits, programs etc that they offer and you have taken advantage of ?

Yours truly,

future AHA member

AHA does a lot to protect your rights to homebrew and is doing work to help those in the few states where it is illegal. Your membership dues help make that happen.

I traded the article I wrote for Zymurgy for four years membership. I like the magazine but probably will never use any of the other perks. But as Ed points out, if they are helping our rights as homebrewers - I guess that is worth the cost of admission in its own right...

My membership pays for itself in the discounts. I get $2 pints every day all day at Uncle Billy's Brew & Que in Austin and 10% off the food tab at BJ's Brewhouse. I got 15% off my tab at Stone's Bistro in CA, and $2 off a t-shirt. It all adds up over time.

I wish - there isn't a single participant within 100 miles of me...

Go to your favorite watering holes and speak with the manager and explain to them the benefits of being a member and point them to the AHA. Most restaurants just don't know about the program. It's of benefit to you as you'll be getting the discounts.

Not many up here in the north part of the state either. But, I think Zymurgy is great. Plus, having an organization that supports our hobby at a national level is worth the price.

WA state liquor laws prohibit official AHA discounts -

so, not a member.

Just because you can't get discounts there doesn't mean you can't (or shouldn't) join. The AHA lobbies state governments, testifies in hearings, and supports legislation to help expand brewing laws. They may one day help change the laws there.

I like the magazine. And while it's not too common occasionally AHA members get cool stuff in the mail, like the Sam Adams glasses they sent out last year.

That is a very good point. I guess where I am coming from is that the hobby is already so relatively expensive (I am still getting essential AG equipment - $100 is still a hard purchase,) that I need to be careful what I spend or I can't even brew. It is measure of putting the money where I can practice the most essential part of the hobby - doing it.

I do not subscribe to any brewing publications, belong to any clubs, AHA or WABL... hell, I am still using the free subscription for here. It's not that I am cheap - it's that I am poor. My contribution to the cause is turning people onto good beer - one bottle at a time.
