I am about to purchase a wort pump, and I'm wondering how it might perform filling a HLT. I am figuring the pump (Chugger, most likely) will be mounted below the mash tun, and pump hot water up to the HLT The question is, do you guys experienced with pumps think it's a good idea to connect the hose (outflow) to the ball valve of the HLT, and use the head pressure to bottom fill the tank? (Approx. 4' in rise from pump outlet to ball-valve quick disconnect).
The Chugger I'm looking at says "Max Flow 7 GPM / Max Head 18.6 FT". But how does that change when pushing water up as it builds in the igloo?
The other option I thought of was putting a bulk head higher on the igloo, and another QD, and fill from the top, but that would increase the distance pumped another 2'. I assume the head of 18.6' is relative, and the higher you go the slower the flow proportionately. But how much is that effected by the volume in the tank as it increases?
Thanks for the tips!
