Using Syrup in A Whiskey Barrel

I am making a brown ale that I wanted to put in a maple syrup bourbon barrel. I have a local homebrew store that has some 5 gallon barrels that I would like to use. My question is do I need to fill the entire barrel up with syrup to get the syrup flavor into the wood? I also have a local place place that sells syrup (that is damn good) they sell 1 gallon bottles for $80 so I was wondering If I could get away with using 1 gallon in the barrel?
