I'm in the middle of brewing a BIAB batch, and a small medical emergency (barfing baby) means that I have to stop this process immediately. I have just enough time to type out this message, and not much more.

I am just about to do the sparge-dunk step, and after that I was hoping to put my covered kettle in the oven (w/ power off) and do the boil tomorrow after work. It's 10 pm now, so that would be in about 19 hours.

I've heard about overnight mashing--will this work as well as that? Is 19 hours too long? Your counsel, please!

If it were me, I'd try to at least get it up to boiling when you can tonight and then put it away to finish off tomorrow. Lacto bacteria from the grains can sour the wort overnight. Not always. There's some folks on here that have left it with no issues, but it could happen. Bring it up to boil will kill what's in there.

But if you can't do that... go take care of the kid and don't sweat the beer. It'll probably be fine anyway, and there's more important things.

Thanks, I took your suggestion. Now to go snuggle my little girl.

Beer vs Baby ?

Can't believe you stopped to type that question.

I had already cleaned her up and put her to bed by then. I had time to tie up my brew, but not time enough to sit with the brew pot for an hour doing my kettle additions, chill, rack, aerate and pitch. That would have kept me up until 2 at least, and I needed to go to bed.

Just so you know, when I started my mash I didn't have a barfing baby. I had a happy, healthy, sleepy baby. I wouldn't start brewing when one of my kids was sick.

Glad to hear that your baby is OK - that really is all that matters. I was under the impression you were emergency room bound, sorry for the confusion on my part!!!

Well at least now you have a cool name for this brew... Barfing Baby Pale Ale (or whatever)!

Well, it might be bad juju to put the word "barf" in the name, considering the chance that this batch might be soured or otherwise infected.

I already have names for my beers that are based on my daughters' names or nicknames. Which is ironic, considering how very difficult it is (for me, at least) to brew while taking care of young children.

My time and energy were stretched pretty thin even before I started brewing four months ago, and then for some reason I decide to undertake an all-consuming hobby like brewing?!? I must be crazy.

Now you just need to teach your kid to hold her liquor so she doesn't keep interrupting your brew sessions when she starts barfing. ;)
