I just got some at a health food store but have also seen them at a fancier- more gourmet grocery store....and of course the LHBS

Look in the bulk/health area of your grocery store if it's big enough. We moved to a smaller town, and I was able to find some in one store.

Cocoa nibs are fragments of roasted cacao beans. As such, they have no milkfat like common chocolate and cocoa products do. Fat makes for a mess when attempting to use those products in a brewing context.

So no, I don't think there are good substitutions. Cacao does come in liquid extract form, but it's also expensive, if that's the issue causing you to seek an alternative.

I used ghirardelli cocoa powder as a sub in a recipe that I had brewed previously. A little messier to use, but I'm not sure I could detect a difference between the two taste wise. Mess wise it was a little harder to clean out, but not much after I soaked my carboy with Oxyclean. Still have some of that porter on tap and my room mates think it's just as good as the batches with nibs.

Bakers chocolate. Just make sure you get the 100% bittersweet. Should be in the baking section of you local grocery store. You can also find it in the candy isle sometimes. Usualy the Ghirardelli brand. Throw it in the last 10 minutes of the boil.
