I've done a ton of reading on this site to prepare myself for building my kegerator/keezer. I was fortunate enough to catch an older Whirlpool freezer on Craigslist yesterday. My current issue however, is the lack of true hinges. Instead I have what appears to be more of a hook coming from the freezer and going into the lid. Once in the lid, there is a piece of metal welded to the hook. I am unable to tell if this runs the length of the lid as I can only follow it with my finger for about an inch.

Has anyone else seen this hinge type? and if so is making a collar an option? I'm not opposed to simply sticking a tower on the lid and adding more towers in the future, but I like the idea of extra clearance the collar would give me.

Sounds like the hinge is inset into edge of the chest freezer wall. You should see mounting screws to remove the lid from the hinge arm.

Take some pictures and post or email them and I'll post them up for you.

Best I can tell, there is a rod that runs the length of the lid welded to the "hooks" on each side. Any ideas on if a collar can easily be used on this freezer? Can I use other hinges on the back without risking hitting the coolant lines? Ultimately I'd like to have 5 or more homebrew kegs running from this freezer. (Which it can handle even without the added height of the collar.)
