AHS Turbodog extract was my first ever batch. I also did a partial mash version of it a few months later. Definitely preferred the partial mash version, but I also controlled temp better and used a different yeast, so who knows if the PM really had any impact. :p

I'll throw my recipe up just in case

5 lbs muntons light DME
1.5 lbs crystal dark
1/2 lbs chocolate malt
1/2 oz chinook 12%aa
1 1/2 oz willamette 4%aa
1 1/2 oz willamette 4%aa
wyeast 1084 irish ale
priming sugar

target OG 1087
target FG 1025

2.5 gal steep @ 150 F -155 F for 45 min
Add DME
boil and add 1/2 oz chinook
boil 85 mins
add willimette 1 1/2 oz
boil 5 mins - rest 5 mins
return to heat
add 1 1/2 willimette
boil 5 mins rest 15 and cool to 60 F

If you brew this again, give WLP029 a try. Its white labs kolsch/german ale yeast. Abita used to say on their bottles that they used an alt yeast for turbodog, which is why i decided to give WLP029 a try. I definitely preferred the result, but again, that was one of a few changes I made, so i can't say definitively it was the yeast. The biggest difference between my two batches was that the chocolate flavors came through more in the second batch.

Well my OG reading was at 1052

Quite a bit off from what the calculations predicted. But I didn't watch the steep and it got up to 170 F. not sure if this affects the OG that much?

She is sleeping in the primary and my holiday will be bottled in a couple hours.

Ill update when the time is needed.

too high on steeping temp shouldn't be a problem on gravity. with steeping grains, there's no conversion going on, the hotter water actually makes sugars more soluble.

if you did partial boil and topped off with water, it probably just wasnt well mixed. I seem to remember 1.058 as a starting gravity, is that about what your recipe was targeting?

Also, did you adjust your gravity reading for temperature? Most hydrometers are calibrated for 60°.

I plugged the stats into "brew builder", some of the ingredients didn't match exactly but I tried to get close. the OG on BB said the target would be give or take 1087. so it's off quite a bit. Oh well

I am guessing on temp because I took it upon myself to crack my thermo so I guess-timated on cool temp. My expert guess-timation is around the 75 F mark
The way I figure, either way I'm low but I feel like it's going to be alright. As long as it gets bubbling its beer! hasn't started as of yet, it's been about 10 hours. I'm off to bed now, just got done drinking my dunkel and bottling me "tidings of comfort and joy"

Was this a 5 gallon batch? There's no way those ingredients get you to 1.087 on a 5 gallon batch. Those ingredients/quantities would only get you to 1.087 for something like a 3 gallon batch.

If it was 1.087, you're going to be way high on alcohol for a turbodog clone. :D

Yea its a 5 gallon batch. That makes me feel better, thanks for the advise.

She's bubbling great after about 20 hours.

plugging that recipe into beersmith, i'm getting a predicted OG of 1.046 if your final volume was 5 gallons.

Well its still bubbling at a good rate.

Now after your post I realized I didn't chance the amount on brew builder...still a rookie!!

No worries. A few more batches in, you'll be able to look at a recipe and go "yeah, there's no friggin way that number is right." :D

lol I just did on my bass pale ale clone I'm putting together.

Im looked up and said, WTF somethings off here. Nailed it down and Tuesday I'm buying a 2nd carboy and brewing another clone!

well Tuesday is here, Racked into secondary! Just updating fast so anyone following knows its not dead ;)

Bottled the dog night before turkey day. Hit my target on the head at 1.014

Gave a little taste and wow! This is gonna be great. I need to pick a 6er of abita and side by side it. Even if its not close, its damn good!

1 week and 4 days, gave it another taste. Carbonation is nice and it tastes so good!
Compared to the turbodog, the color is dead on. I still need to side by side it but wow. Even if its not the same, this is so good, it doesnt even matter.
