Anyone here ever refinish a bathtub? I'm going to remodel our bathub, and we have big old cast iron tub that has worn out porcelain. I can lay the tile, do the drywall, etc, but I think I'd like to have a pro refinish the tub to make sure it looks good. I'd thought about just getting a new one, but getting this one out of the bathroom is going to be a b**tch.

I refinished one tub & it is on my list of things I'll never do again. I've seen good professional jobs. Another option is an insert that goes over the old tub. They are mainly used in the hotel industry. They are like fiberglass pre-fabs, but not as heavy.

Yeah, that's what I'm seeing from other sites - a professional job is worth the money. Now, I'm wondering how much money that is?

You gotta figure $500 plus for a repaint, it will only look as good as the surface that's under it.......get a couple of estimates if you go this way -

If that's a clawfoot, replacing it in fiberglass will be $1000 plus......

If you are going to try to remove it, don't try to lift it out - they can be 400 lbs or more - cover it with an old comforter and go get an 8 lb sledge - on about the 5th hit you will get manageable pieces.......

Remember, you only get one back - don't mess with it!

Skol!

I can just pile on on the idea that you shouldn't do it yourself. I helped my dad do one and he's a pretty handy diy type of guy. It was a major pita and it didn't last long before it started looking crappy.
